Confessions of a Learner Driver (Part Two!)

It’s been over a year since I posted about my experience as a learner driver so I thought it was time to do a little update on how things are now!

The last time I posted, I had barely been on the road a month. I’d been practising (literally just going up and down the gears) in the quietest area where I’d only encountered maybe a total of five cars in a month. So to be out on a “proper” road with lots of other vehicles was a pretty big transition!

Twelve months later, it’s a whole different story. I’m still a learner but I’m (generally!) much more confident now. I’ve progressed to built-up areas and I’m dealing with all the things I was so anxious about when I first started out. Traffic lights, roundabouts, hill starts, parallel parking…it’s all finally starting to come easier to me. I don’t stress as much anymore about the different situations that come up and I’m not as intimidated by other drivers either. I definitely still need to work on some things but I’m getting there. I’ve spent so many hours practising and taking professional lessons so it’s great to feel it’s been worth the effort.

I’m hoping to sit my test before the end of the year. Before I go for it though, I want to be absolutely certain I’m ready so I have the best chance of passing…and also so I don’t waste the €85 it costs to sit the test in the first place! The thoughts of it does make me a little nervous but mostly I’m excited. I just can’t wait to have my full licence, to get my own car and to be able to go anywhere I want without depending on others. It would actually change my life so hopefully it won’t be long now ’til I can remove the L plates (…and replace them with N plates!) and tick off another thing on my to-do list!
