As much as I love homemade smoothies and milkshakes, I don’t make them all that often. It’s not about not having the right ingredients because they can be made so many ways and it’s not about timing issues because they can be whipped up in minutes. It’s simply just because I find the machine such a pain to clean! It fits awkwardly in the sink, it has these fiddly pieces and no matter how hard I scrub, I’ll still find bits of fruit or whatever stuck to the sides — serious dislike!
Some drinks, however, are worth the extra washing-up effort. This homemade version of McDonald’s Shamrock shake is one of those drinks. Deliciously creamy and refreshingly minty, I make mine with low-fat milk and it tastes just as amazing. In my trusty blender, I mix 400ml low-fat milk, 400ml of good quality vanilla-ice cream, a drop of peppermint extract and a drop of green food colouring. This will make enough for two. Of course, you can adjust the measurements to your own liking depending on how thick or thin you like your shake and how many servings you need. It’s always better to make a little extra because one glass of this is never enough!
