Buttermilk French Toast

I like to get rid of leftovers by Sunday evening so today when I saw that I had half a bottle of buttermilk and half a loaf of stale bread in the kitchen; I decided to throw the two together in to one dish. The result was a stack of tangy French toast. To satisfy my sweet tooth, I drizzled each slice with a little honey and served them up with fresh fruit on the side. For a more traditional taste, you can easily swap the buttermilk for regular milk. Either way, you’ll have a delicious little dish that will work at any time of the day.

french toast

10-12 slices of stale bread
600ml buttermilk
3 eggs
3 tsps. vanilla extract

Whisk the buttermilk, eggs and vanilla together until light and frothy. Pour this mixture in to a shallow bowl. Soak a slice of bread, one at a time, and fry on a medium heat for about 2 minutes on each side.

  1. That’s such a good idea! Do you have a good source for getting buttermilk? I tried Sainsbury’s but they didn’t have any, do you have to go to a specialty shop do you know?

    1. That’s strange, all my local supermarkets stock it! There is a way of making your own buttermilk by mixing regular milk with vinegar. I’ve actually never done it myself but my grandmother used to and it worked really well 🙂
