Caramel and apple go hand-in-hand, particularly at this time of year. Today I decided to put them both in to a good old-fashioned crumble. This is a deliciously sweet and stodgy dessert. It’s so quick and easy to put together that it really makes for the perfect lazy afternoon treat.
Core, peel and slice up 4 medium-sized apples. I used ordinary eating apples but you could try cooking apples for a little tartness. I also stewed half of the apples to create a nice mix of softened and slightly firmer apple pieces. Stir in four to five tablespoons of caramel, coating all the apple pieces completely. You could make your own but I had a can of caramel on hand so I used that. Place the caramel apple mix in to an ovenproof dish.
To make a lovely crumbly topping, you have to use your fingers. Rub 3 ounces of butter into 6 ounces of plain flour and 3 ounces of caster sugar until it’s all soft and powdery. Spread it evenly over the caramel apple mix. Bake in the oven at 180°celsius for 25 to 30 minutes (or until it’s firm and golden on top).
Serve warm – it’s especially amazing with vanilla ice-cream!
