Pompeo briefs Iraqi leaders on US security concerns over Iran

BREAKING Pompeo Makes Surprise Visit to Iraq Amid Iran Escalation

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday made an unannounced visit to the Iraqi capital Baghdad, during which he discussed with Iraqi leaders the latest regional developments amid the rising tension with Iran.

Mr Pompeo's visit comes as Iran warned it will resume uranium enrichment unless the remaining signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal - France, Britain, Germany, China and Russian Federation - can show it is worth pursuing.

He refused to give further details, but U.S. media reports say Iran has likely moved short-range ballistic missiles to ships in the Persian Gulf that could target United States troops and those of USA allies.

"We talked to them about the importance of Iraq ensuring that it's able to adequately protect Americans in their country", Pompeo told reporters after the meetings.

On Sunday, the United States announced that it was deploying an aircraft carrier group and bombers to the Middle East, accusing Iran of posing a threat to Washington and its allies in the region.

The "campaign to continue to prevent ISIS terror inside of Iraq itself is something that's very central.to the Iraqi government", Pompeo said. Iraq and Iran are neighbors, and maintain cordial relations.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, whose foreign minister, Anders Samuelsen, had also been set to meet Pompeo in Nuuk. More than 5,000 USA troops are stationed on Iraqi soil.

Lanka town put under curfew after clashes between Muslims, Christians
Across the country there are 10,194, and for each of them the authorities have guarded a security agent. Catholic masses have been banned for a second weekend amid heightened security throughout Sri Lanka.

Iran, meanwhile, was expected to announced Wednesday that it would partially withdraw from the nuclear deal it struck with world powers in 2015. Iran won the ear of many top Iraqi politicians after it stepped in to fill the political vacuum following the 2003 USA invasion.

Iraq has extensive ties with Iran that go back generations and Iran backs some Iraqi militias.

"Iraq is going to need two or three years to achieve self-sufficiency in the field, which will be possible only if big projects are implemented", Al-Khateeb said.

The Trump administration has made several recent moves to squeeze Iran.

The Trump administration has imposed sweeping sanctions on Iran, including trying to stop all exports of its oil, although it has issued a waiver for energy-starved Iraq to keep buying power from its neighbour.

Germany has wide disagreements with the Trump administration and along with other European nations still supports the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated under former United States president Barack Obama.

While Trump has sought to dismantle much of President Barack Obama's policies, he particularly criticized the Iran nuclear deal for failing to address Tehran's ballistic missile program and what he described as its malign influence across the rest of the Mideast.
