Uber driver protests ahead of IPO spell uncertain future for gig economy

REDONDO BEACH CA- MARCH 25 Driver and strike organizer Nicole Moore speaks during a one-day strike against Uber and Lyft in front of an Uber office. Over 200 drivers marched with signs and protested a recent 25% deduction in pay for Uber drivers

Waymo has been providing rides through its "early rider program" since late past year, and though early riders are no longer bound by NDAs you still need to be part of the program to hail one of its autonomous vans through their app.

Sharon Block, executive director of the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School, which is Harvard's forum for research and teaching on the world of work and its implications for society.

"Over 75 percent drive less than 10 hours a week to supplement their existing jobs", Lyft said.

"Whether it's being able to track your earnings, new safety features, or stronger insurance protections, we'll continue working to improve the experience for and with drivers".

It was unclear exactly how many drivers plan to honor the work stoppage, but the Southern California-based group Rideshare Drivers United said 5,000 of its members are turning off their apps for the entire day.

Lyft, which has almost 40% of the US ride-sharing market, said increased demand helped push revenue to $776 million in the quarter, 95% above its $397.2 million a year earlier, and up 16% from its fourth quarter. The report was compiled by the App-Based Drivers Association, a local group of drivers affiliated with Teamsters Local 117, the union that advocated in recent years for allowing ride-hailing drivers to unionize.

The strike and protests come two days before Uber is expected to debut on the stock market with an initial public offering that is expected to raise around $9 billion and would value Uber at about $91.5 billion.

Drivers say they are frustrated by declining rates and a lack of transparency from Uber in how the company calculates their pay. But unlike the viral social media outrage surrounding the #deleteUber campaign two years ago, the biggest risk to Uber isn't that customers take notice.

Drivers for ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft planned to turn off their apps Wednesday to protest what they say are declining wages at a time when both companies are raking in billions of dollars from investors. While the boycott in NY will last only through the morning rush hour, drivers' groups in Boston and Los Angeles are encouraging members to turn off their apps for the full day.

Together, drivers for the two companies provided about 91,000 rides per day in the Seattle area, according to ridership reports filed with the city past year.

WASHINGTON: Rideshare drivers in major U.S. cities were set to stage a series of strikes and protests Wednesday, casting a shadow over the keenly anticipated Wall Street debut of sector leader Uber. NY drivers are demandingan end to sudden account deactivations and the right to appeal through the courts. The latter is done to stumble Uber's stock market launch.

An Uber spokeswoman said the company was working toward improving wages and benefits for its approximately 3 million drivers worldwide.

"We want a living wage", Uber driver and organiser Mostafa Maklad told Gizmodo when the strikes were first organised. Now, Khosrowshahi will be beholden to Wall Street's pressures to build a sustainable business.

Lyft expects revenue growth to slow to 52% or 53% for 2019 after doubling a year ago.

Across about 560 Uber and Lyft trips in Seattle, the company kept a median of 31 percent of the fare a rider paid, up from 20 percent around 2013, according to the analysis. But Lyft, which is also deeply unprofitable, fell below its offering price in its second day of trading as investors questioned whether it could make money.
