Facebook will finally start explaining its choices for your News Feed

Hoping to take away the secrecy of the timeline algorithm users will be able to discover why certain posts videos and ads are appearing on their timeline

Facebook is to begin explaining to users why they are seeing certain posts on their news feed in an attempt to make the platform easier to understand.

Hoping to take away the secrecy of the timeline algorithm, account holders will be able to discover why certain posts, videos and ads are appearing on their timeline and "take action to further personalise what you see".

Following the release of "Why am I seeing this ad?" feature four years ago, Facebook today announced the "Why am I seeing this post?" that will help users better understand and easily control what they see from friends, Pages and Groups in their News Feed. The good news is that Facebook is opening up about how your News Feed is managed, but the bad news is that you can't actually control any of the work that goes into showing you posts, so you can't tailor anything to your needs. It could be a pretty straightforward reason, such as it's by one of your friends or from a group or page you've joined. At any rate, Facebook product manager Ramya Sethuraman explains in a company blog post that Facebook has launched a new tool called "Why am I seeing this post?" that will for the first time show how post-ranking works in the app.

A new button will show you how your previous activity on the social network has led its algorithms to prioritise contain from certain people, groups and organisations. This tool is created to explain how this post has appeared on your timeline.

Trump cuts foreign aid, threatens to close Mexico border
Right now, about 60 asylum seekers a day are returned to Mexico but are allowed to return to the U.S. for court dates. And a group of House Democrats visiting El Salvador denounced the administration's decision to cut aid to the region.

If you've ever wondered why you are seeing the world's most insane news articles on Facebook, beyond it being Facebook, then you're in luck. Examples shared by Facebook include "you've liked [this friend's] posts more than posts from others", "you've commented on posts with photos more than other media types" or "this post in [this group] is popular compared to other posts you've seen".

The aptly named "Why am I seeing this post?" builds on Facebook's "Why am I seeing this ad?" tool that's been around since 2014.

In addition to learning how factors like basic demographic details, interests, and website visits contribute to your online advertising, users can find out what personal info matches sponsors' lists. More importantly, it will also explain its position on the news feed. It will also confirm if another marketing partner was involved in running the ad.
