No deal Brexit would be catastrophic for United Kingdom economy - Philip Hammond

"The meeting discussed a range of issues, including whether there is sufficient support in the Commons to bring back a meaningful vote (for her deal) this week", a spokesman said.

Parliament may hold a series of votes this week to determine what Brexit proposals, if any, could command majority support.

Finance Minister Philip Hammond said that a change of prime minister at this stage would not help to break the Brexit impasse.

MPs should instead, Fox said, focus on passing May's deal at the third time of asking or else risk no deal or a further Brexit delay necessitating the United Kingdom taking part in European elections.

Mr Lidington said Mrs May was doing a "fantastic job" and added: 'One thing that working closely with the prime minister does is cure you completely of any lingering shred of ambition to want to do that task'.

British Prime Minister Theresa May attends a church service on Sunday in Aylesbury, England.

May's changing stance reflects the plan's dismal chances in the House of Commons after two prior defeats.

Mrs May has been told by ministers she needs to resign after infuriating MPs on all sides by blaming Britain's delayed withdrawal on parliament, according to The Sunday Times.

"I'm afraid it's all over for the PM".

The Mail on Sunday said May could be ousted "within days" and Environment Secretary Michael Gove, a prominent Brexiteer, could become interim leader. What I think is true is that the real debate is not really about the withdrawal agreement at all.

Almost three years since the 2016 referendum, it remains unclear how, when or if Brexit will ever take place.

Earlier in the day, the European Union stressed that it does not recognise Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights. But Trump has denied that his decision has anything to do with the Israeli elections.

The UK parliament deciding not to leave the European Union could be the most controversial outcome.

Despite the pressure she is facing to step down, May has survived two no-confidence votes in Parliament, the most recent being in January of this year.

But Fox said the fact the options would include ideas such as a deal involving single market membership, a second referendum or rescinding Brexit, showed there was a disconnect between a "leave electorate and, seemingly, a remain-leaning parliament".

MPs may then try to turn their non-binding votes into enforceable law.

It is also conceivable that MPs failing to reach an agreement on the Brexit deal could wait until April 12 for a no-deal Brexit.

But even before the prime minister made a decision to delay the meaningful vote this week, Labour has been backing away from immediately triggering the process, which could ultimately lead to a general election.

Labour MPs believe that May could still at the eleventh hour win over some of their colleagues in Leave areas if she agrees to a Lisa Nandy amendment aimed at giving parliament a vote on any future trade deal. Lawmakers voted down the Brexit plan twice, and May has raised the possibility of bringing it back a third time if enough legislators appear willing to switch their votes. Besides, they argue, shouldn't people be allowed to have a say on the actual Brexit deal on the table - isn't that democratic, too?

"It's unlikely at the moment, simply because there just doesn't seem to be support for Parliament", said Anand Menon, a professor of European politics at King's College London.

After last week's European Union summit approval of an extension for the UK's departure, things still remain quite misty about how the country is to leave the European Union, if ever.

Mrs May also faces pressure from groups demanding a second Brexit referendum.

An estimated one million people flooded London on Saturday calling for a second referendum while an online petition that started on Wednesday, asking the government to end the Brexit process, has collected over four million signatures.
