Christchurch attack: New Zealand's Ardern orders top-level inquiry

Minister Jacinda Ardern leaves after the Friday prayers at Hagley Park outside Al Noor mosque in Christchurch New Zealand

Last week, New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern said that the country would cover the costs of burying the 50 victims as well as "repatriation costs for any family members who would like to move their loved ones away from New Zealand".

'While New Zealanders and Muslim communities around the world are both grieving and showing compassion, they are also quite rightly asking about how this terror attack was able to happen here, ' Prime Minister Ardern told a press conference on Monday.

Talks would include discussions around an upgrade to the free trade agreement between the two countries as well as other issues, she said. "It will inquire into the individual and his activities before the terrorist attack, including, of course, a look at agencies".

Mr Bridges said the review of security legislation was needed to see if the security agencies needed greater powers. It has the power to compel witnesses to testify and organisations to hand over documents.

"What I can say, today, is that there will be a focus on whether our intelligence community was concentrating its resources appropriately and whether there were any reports that could or should have been alerting them to this attack", she said.

The alleged gunman, 28-year-old Australian Brenton Tarrant, has been transferred from Christchurch and is now believed to be held in a maximum security prison in Auckland.

Ardern has acknowledged there were complexities in the relationship with China, but dismissed concerns of a rift with New Zealand's largest trading partner. He's due to return to court on April 5.

Ardern, who swiftly denounced the attack as terrorism, announced a ban on military-style semi-automatic and assault rifles under tough new gun laws on Thursday.

R&B singer Alicia Keys also took to social media to encourage her followers to share the photo of Ardern wearing a hijab and hugging a woman affected by the terror attack.

"This is widely known amongst social media leadership, our views on the matter", she said.

Eight Pakistanis were laid to rest in New Zealand on Friday. It is now holding an inquiry into historical abuse in state care.
