Petition to revoke Brexit crashes UK Parliament's website

Theresa May arriving at possibly the last EU summit of a British prime minister

The Prime Minister took aim at her fellow MPs last night, saying they are responsible for the impasse over Brexit.

May's appeal to the heads of state and government was described by sources as "90 minutes of nothing".

By contrast, the most popular pro-Brexit petition on the parliament website, which calls on the government to "leave the European Union without a deal in March 2019", had received nearly 375,000 signatories by Thursday afternoon. "After listening to her, I now think 5%", Macron said.

Grilled for over an hour by the other 27 leaders at the Thursday summit, Mrs May insisted she could win parliamentary backing next week for the deal that would ease Britain out on terms she agreed with the European Union previous year.

Parliament last week voted against holding a second referendum after the main opposition Labour Party, which has been highly ambivalent on the issue, abstained.

But Commons Speaker John Bercow told MPs who complained about the Prime Minister's statement: "None of you is a traitor".

If not, then Britain would crash out with no deal next Friday unless the government revokes Article 50.

"We were asked for assurances in January, we gave it to them", the European Commission president said.

If MPs approve Theresa May's deal this week (stop sniggering) Britain will have until May 22 to pass the necessary legislation for a smooth exit.

"I hope that we can all agree we are now at the moment of decision".

In a press conference, European Council President Donald Tusk said that, until 12 April - the deadline by which the United Kingdom would have to indicate whether it would stand candidates in the 2019 European Parliament elections - "all options remain on the table".

This week, Trump unloaded a new series of anti-McCain tweets in which he said he never had been "a fan" and never would be. McCain served in the Vietnam War and died of brain cancer a year ago .

With fears in Brussels growing that the United Kingdom is heading for a no-deal break, Mr Tusk said he would not hesitate to call an emergency summit next week if that proved necessary.

"I suspect there will be people who were thinking of voting for the deal who will have been put off", she said.

"It's now or never for a lot of people", she said.

Mrs May was asked to explain why she thought she would get her deal through the House of Commons at the third attempt.

"We will do everything in the remaining, admittedly few, days to achieve an orderly, joint solution".

"We are all waiting, waiting for what the British intend to do", said EU Parliament President Antonio Tajani.

The UK government "will still have a chance of a deal, no deal, a long extension or revoking Article 50" until 12 April, he said.

The bulk of the meeting took place behind closed doors in Mrs May's absence, after her plea for a longer extension to June 30 fell on deaf ears. "But there is a real risk of an accidental hard Brexit", one warned.

Theresa May cuts short her attendance at the European Council summit in Brussels to return to the United Kingdom and embark on a drive to win over at least 75 MPs to her Brexit plan.

Mrs May said people had voted to leave and were told their decision would be respected.
