New Zealand prime minister announces immediate ban on all assault weapons

Jacinda Ardern,New Zealand,Christchurch

The weapons under review include handguns, generally restricted to use only in shooting sports or at licensed gun ranges, as well as military-style assault rifles that are classified as restricted and can be used only at licensed target ranges.

As New Zealand police continue to work with families to positively identify those slain in last Friday's attack at two Christchurch mosques, members of the community buried their dead Wednesday and pressed forward with their lives.

Buy-back programs will be set up for the banned guns, she added.

The AR-15 was used at Port Arthur and has been used in a number of high-profile USA mass shootings. Now, our laws will too.

Ardern has also vowed never to say the alleged gunman's name, saying in an emotional statement that he is a terrorist that does not deserve to be named.

"Every semi-automatic weapon used in the terror attack on Friday will be banned", Ardern continued, addiing that she hoped the law would be in place by April 11.

The policy announcement comes just days after Ardern announced the nation would enact sweeping reforms faster than Australia did after the Port Arthur shooting. Through a translator, he said he felt compelled to support the grieving.

Speaking of the Mustafa family, Ardern said: "I can not tell you how gutting it is to know that a family came here for safety and for refuge, and they should have been safe here". After their funeral rites are completed, they will be buried in New Zealand. The minimum legal age to own a gun in New Zealand is now 16, or 18 for military-style semi-automatic weapons.

Muslims in Germany anxious after New Zealand attacks
Facebook said it blocked the upload of 1.2 million video clips and removed another 300,000 within 24 hours. Elsehwhere in Christchurch , a biker gang paid honor to the victims by performing a rendition of the haka.

Speaking at news conference, Ardern announced that the country will will hold a two minute silence to commemorate the victims of the mosque massacre this coming Friday.

Some people expressed support for the victims in a uniquely New Zealand way. "We will ban parts that cause a firearm to generate semi-automatic, automatic or close to automatic gunfire", she said.

"Police have been working relentlessly, doing everything in our power to gather all appropriate evidence from what are active crime scenes so we can allow people to return to the mosques as quickly as possible".

Mr Fouda said Al Noor workers had been trying feverishly to fix the destruction at the mosque.

In the latest display of cross cultural solidarity in New Zealand, as Muslims prayed and prostrated before Al Noor mosque dozens of locals silently stood behind them, their arms interlinked.

Most victims were migrants or refugees from countries such as Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Somalia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The man charged in the attack had purchased his weapons legally using a standard firearms license and enhanced their capacity by using 30-round magazines "done easily through a simple online purchase", she said.

A 44-year-old businessman was remanded in custody after a preliminary court appearance in Christchurch Wednesday on charges of distributing footage of one of the mosque shootings.
