Whale Ate 88 Pounds Of Plastic Before Washing Up Dead In Philippines

Dead whale washed up in Philippines had 40kg of plastic bags in its stomach

A young Cuvier's beaked whale washed up dead on a beach in Compostela Valley in the Philippines, its stomach filled with 88 pounds (40 kilograms) of plastic bags.

A necropsy on the Cuvier's beaked whale (above) found about 40kg of plastic, including grocery bags and rice sacks inside its body.

The NGO, aided by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, detailed in a Saturday Facebook post that at least 16 rice sacks, four plantation-style banana bags and several shopping bags were just some of the items retrieved from the creature's insides.

Darrell Blatchley, a marine biologist who examined the whale, said that it had died of starvation and dehydration through consuming plastic. "It's disgusting", it said. The mass of plastic bags in the whale's stomach was described as so large it had started to calcify.

"I was not prepared for the amount of plastic".

Lindsay Mosher, Oceanic Society's Blue Habits project manager, said in an email to The Post that "this whale's tragic death by plastic is an important wake-up call to the fact that we can and must do more to stop ocean plastic pollution".

"The plastic in some areas was so compact it was nearly becoming calcified, nearly like a solid brick", Darrell Blatchley, president of the museum, told the Times.

The necropsy was conducted by scientists at the D' Bone Collector Museum.

The Philippines is ranked among the world's worst countries for plastic pollution, Mr Blatchley said. Cetaceans - marine mammals including whales, dolphins and porpoises - do not drink ocean water but absorb fresh water through their food, he explained.

Around 8.8 million tons (8 million metric tons) of plastic get dumped into the ocean every year, according to a 2015 report by the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy.

"Four of these dead animals were pregnant".

With no national policies geared toward decreasing this plastic footprint, GAIA and other environmental organizations are "calling on governments and manufacturers to regulate, and stop producing, single-use plastics", as it's estimated 10 companies are responsible for 60 percent of all branded waste collected on the island.

"This can not continue. The Philippines needs to change from the children up or nothing will be left", Blatchley said.
