Facebook, Instagram accounts working after historic outage

US prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network's practice of sharing users' data

Facebook grappled Thursday with a widespread outage, forcing millions of people to taste life without the world's largest social media platform. "We're working on getting this fixed as fast as we can".

"Mostly resolved...but it takes time", the person reportedly said. "We've now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering".

As I was aimlessly flicking through the account's stream of well-worn gifs hastily plucked from Twitter's selection -Titanic, Frasier, Bill & Ted, all the classics - I felt a pang of envy that my social media habit of choice hadn't.

United States prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network's practice of sharing users' data.

Before Facebook's latest update, Instagram came back online. That outage lasted for about a day.

Facebook acknowledged the issues, and assured users that they were not caused by a malicious DDoS, in a post on Twitter - the only social network which appeared to survive the crash, as it's not part of Facebook's "family of apps".

A grand jury in NY has subpoenaed information from at least two major smartphone makers about such arrangements with Facebook, according to the Times.

Bangladesh team escape in New Zealand mosque shooting; six killed

"Facebook isn't opening again on a web browser".

That second tweet was posted around 3 p.m. ET. "Our systems processed about 7.5 million problem reports from end users over the course of this incident".

People took to Twitter to complain about the downtime.

As for its short-term concerns, Facebook still hasn't publicly stated why it was hit with such a devastating outage in the first place, and it's unclear how it will deal with angry advertisers. It also affected people on the West Coast, including in Portland.

No cause has been given but Facebook said it wasn't a distributed denial of service or cyberattack.
