UN Security Council divides over solution for Venezuelan crisis

Arreaza denounced what he called "aggression" being perpetrated by the United States against Venezuela, saying the "economic blockade against Venezuela, as well as the blockade against Cuba, are coercive unilateral measures that violate the UN charter".

In a highly charged debate at the United Nations on Tuesday, U.S. Special Envoy on Venzuela Elliott Abrams accused Russian Federation of reviving Cold War policies and warned that Guaido's safety is at risk.

A top Russian security official accused the USA on Tuesday of deploying troops in Colombia and Puerto Rico ahead of a planned military intervention in Venezuela to topple President Nicolas Maduro.

Ma Zhaoxu, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said that China opposes military intervention in Venezuela.

In his remarks, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza asked the Security Council to pass a resolution rejecting "the threat and the use of force" against his country.

Fresh from a trip to South America to announce new sanctions against the Venezuelan leadership, Vice President Mike Pence dismissed an idea floated by the Venezuelan foreign minister that President Donald Trump and Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro meet.

War clouds gather over Pakistan, India as other nations urge calm
Pakistan retaliated by shooting down an Indian MiG-21 aircraft and capturing a pilot, while India said it downed a Pakistani jet. The official says the incident occurred after at least three Pakistan combat jets entered India-administered Kashmir airspace.

"For democracy to return and for Venezuela to rebuild-Maduro must go", he wrote.

News agencies said the US resolution asks UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to help ensure "free, fair, and credible" presidential election with worldwide observers.

The US-drafted measure "stresses the importance of ensuring the security" of all lawmakers and opposition members, but a reference in a previous draft expressing "full support" for the National Assembly was dropped.

At a Security Council meeting Tuesday, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia called the weekend attempt by the Venezuelan opposition to carry in aid shipments from Colombia nothing but a "humanitarian show" created by the United States.

At the Colombian border, new clashes left several injured.

Maduro also referred to National Security Adviser John Bolton as an "extremist and expert of the Cold War" and US envoy Elliot Abrams "a liar that trafficked arms and drugs in Central America and the world and brought war to the United States".
