London teenager who joined Islamic State wants to 'come home': Report

Shamima Begum was one of three schoolgirls from Bethnal Green in East London who traveled to Syria four years ago to join Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

Ms Begum, who was tracked down in a refugee camp in Syria by The Times, told the publication she fled the last IS enclave in Baghuz, eastern Syria, two weeks ago, as she had exhausted of life on the battlefield and feared for her unborn child's safety.

Despite having "no regrets" she now wants to return to the United Kingdom after her husband was killed and two children died. They had told their parents they were simply going out for the day.

He said their ages at the time of fleeing home made them "vulnerable" to be "tricked" into travelling to Syria.

Begum, now nine months pregnant, explained to the Times of London that she initially settled in Raqqa, the Syrian capital of the group's self-proclaimed caliphate.

A new Pentagon report says the USA government is encouraging other countries to accelerate efforts to repatriate foreign ISIS fighters to their home countries for prosecution.

She is now one of 39,000 people in a refugee camp in northern Syria.

Begum's case is not the first of its kind - Tareena Shakil, a British woman in her twenties, was sentenced to six years in jail after returning from Syria with her child.

"Every now and then there are bombs and stuff". The life that they show on the propaganda videos; it's a normal life.

"It was from a captured fighter seized on a battlefield, an enemy of Islam".

In a shocking interview with The Times earlier this week, Begum said she had no regrets about joining ISIS. "I don't regret coming here".

Iran's Islamic Revolution Meant "40 Years Of Failure": Trump Advisor
In January, Mr Rouhani said Iran was facing its worst economic crisis since the Shah was toppled. Iran and Saudi Arabia are locked in proxy wars in Iraq, Yemen and Syria.

Another British jihadi bride, Tareena Shakil, who got out of the war zone with her child, lied to the security services on her return and was jailed for membership of a terrorist group. "She's pregnant and vulnerable, and it's important we get her out of al-Hawl camp and home as soon as possible", she told ITV News. "And there is so much oppression and corruption going on that I don't really think they deserve victory", she added.

"That makes me think twice".

"It gives us some kind of positive hope for the family", he said.

He added: "My message is clear - if you supported terrorist organisations overseas I will not hesitate to prevent your return".

Shamima Begum said she had seen two of her friends a fortnight ago, but it is not clear whether Amira Abase was one of them.

He added that if Shamima Begum, 19, did come home she could be prosecuted.

British security minister Ben Wallace has suggested that, in those situations, the British government would at least consider helping them to come home, but then there's the possibility of prosecution and a jail sentence for supporting a terrorist group.

"Twisted minds can be straightened with teamwork with the government and family", he said.

Speaking this morning to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Wallace insisted that British officials' lives wouldn't be risked to rescue the likes of Begum.

Dal Babu, a former Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent, said it should be remembered that Ms Begum was groomed as a child to become a radicalised woman and was a "victim of brainwashing".

With the Islamic State's territory dwindling to nothing, more and more members, including females, are surrendering to anti-ISIS forces. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of stlucianewsonline.com, its sponsors or advertisers.
