Former US Counter Intel Agent Indicted for Spying for Iran

US Air Force officer who defected 'spied for Iran'

In exchange, she disclosed classified information, including detailed information about US intelligence officials, using information to draft "target packages" against those intelligence community individuals, the indictment charges.

A former U.S. Air Force counterintelligence specialist who defected to Iran has been charged with providing classified information to the Islamic Republic, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday by the Justice Department.

A former USA counterintelligence agent has been indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiracy to deliver and delivering national defense information to representatives of the Iranian government, prosecutors said. USA officials believe she is still in Iran.

Witt defected to Iran in 2013 after attending an Iranian conference in 2012 condemning American decadence.

Four Iranians who helped Witt in the cyber hack were also named in the indictment.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Witt and her alleged co-conspirators, who remain at large. The hackers sent the targets messages and emails that purported to be legitimate but instead contained malicious software that, if opened, would have given them access to the officials' computer and network.

According to an undated Federal Bureau of Investigation missing persons declaration regarding Witt, she had not been in contact with anyone since 2013.

Mesri isn't just some random cyber-criminal, and he's believed to be a member of the "Charming Kitten" Iranian cyber-espionage unit, a top hacker and a close collaborator of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the country's main intelligence service.

Justice McMahon called the crimes "pure evil" and especially condemned McArthur's exploitation of his victims' vulnerabilities. Evidence revealed in a hearing showed McArthur kept items from his victims and had photographs of them on his computer.

After her defection, Witt allegedly proceeded to provide Iranian officials with the code name and classified mission details of the U.S. Department of Defense Special Access Program.

The announcement, which also included sanctions on the New Horizon Organization, organization officials, and a company tied to the hacking effort, came on the opening day of a US-led global conference in Warsaw, Poland aimed at boosting pressure on Tehran.

After moving to Iran and converting to Islam, prosecutors claim Witt was housed by the Iranian government and provided with a computer, which she used to compile "target packages" containing information for her new employers on American military and intelligence personnel.

Witt faces two counts of delivering military information to a foreign government and one count of conspiracy.

Witt served in the Air Force from 1997-2008 and began working at the Department of Defense as a contractor in 2010.

Four Iranian citizens have also been charged with attempting to install spy software on computers belonging to Ms Witt's colleagues. She also reportedly went overseas several times on counterintelligence missions. That year, an unidentified person contacted her and remarked that she was well-trained.

"Our intelligence professionals swear an oath to protect our country, and we trust them to uphold their oath", said Assistant Attorney General John Demers, who leads the Justice Department's National Security Division. "I got a copy of the Quran and started reading it", she said.
