Venezuela opposition takes to streets over blocked aid

Venezuela's Supreme Court says Guaido's status invalid

The lawyer and global law expert was appointed Venezuelan ambassador to Brazil by opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who has been recognised by dozens of countries as the head of Venezuela's legitimate government instead of leftist President Nicolas Maduro.

Nicolas Maduro, right, follows Venezuela's then-President Hugo Chavez as they arrive to a ceremony declaring Chavez victor of presidential elections at the Electoral Council in Caracas, Venezuela, on October 10, 2012.

Maduro called the American sanctions the reason behind Venezuela's economic problems that in this way the U.S. "has meant to create a humanitarian crisis in order to justify a military intervention".

The protests, which were taking place on the country's Youth Day, had been called by self-declared acting president Juan Guaido, whose ability to mobilize the aid is seen as a key test in his power struggle with Maduro.

Maduro, however, has denied there is a humanitarian crisis and blamed the economic problems on USA sanctions.

Last week, two USA trucks carrying food and medical supplies arrived at Venezuela's border, according to a U.S. official in the Colombian border town of Cucuta.

Although he has wide global support in his bid to oust Maduro, Guaido needs the support of the armed forces.

Arreaza told reporters at the United Nations on Tuesday that the Maduro government wants to deepen cooperation with the world body, which now works in the country on nutrition and health programs through UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

He said more than 300,000 Venezuelans are at "risk of dying" amid shortages.

Venezuela's embattled President Nicolás Maduro has blamed the United States for his country's crisis, labelling Donald Trump's government a "gang of extremists".

Republican Doug Collins assailed the goal for the hearing and unsuccessfully called for it to be adjourned. Thursday, the Senate judiciary committee voted along party lines, 12-10 , to advance Barr's nomination.

In Caracas on Tuesday, a sea of colors gathered downtown as thousands emerged to share in the carnival atmosphere.

'The so-called humanitarian aid is just a media show, ' Mr Barrera, who represents the city of San Cristobal, told MailOnline.

He said: 'I know we have problems.

Guaido, who has galvanized the opposition after several years of in-fighting and government crackdowns, vows to keep calling protests to pressure Maduro to step down so new presidential elections can be held.

Maduro has refused to assistance, saying it's part of a Trump administration coup aimed at exploiting Venezuela's vast oil resources.

USA supplies were among the first delivered to a collection point established in the Colombian border town of Cucuta.

But in a worrying development a brigade of Venezuela's feared FAES para-military police - that has been blamed for the summary execution of more than 150 anti-government protesters - were spotted arriving at a military airport close to the Colombian border. "We don't need a building to be an embassy", she said at a news conference at Brazil's Foreign Ministry.

Maduro's adversaries say he has run roughshod over democratic institutions and ravaged the nation's economy through nationalizations and a corruption-riddled exchange control system.

Lavrov also said Russian Federation was ready for consultations on the situation in Venezuela in line with the United Nations charter. Maduro counters that he is victim of an "economic war".
