Governor Northam digs himself further into hole in new interview

Fairfax, a 39-year-old Democrat, won election in November alongside Northam, who has been fighting for his political survival since a 1984 yearbook surfaced that features a racist photo on a page dedicated to him.

"Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass", Northam told co-host Gayle King.

"I just feel like we were slapped on one cheek, and here it goes again", said costumier Tricia Emle. While Northam said he won't resign in the wake of the scandal, if a scandal plaguing another person in Virginia's government proves to be true, he said Fairfax will have to resign. The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus and multiple Democratic presidential candidates have called on him to resign. "But he sacrificed so much of his ability to govern effectively".

If Fairfax were to leave, it's unclear who could replace him as lieutenant governor. Northam said in a press conference a week ago, though, that he'd once darkened his skin to take part in a Michael Jackson dance competition.

Comstock also said that there appears to be no confidence in the state's governor, Ralph Northam, either.

In an earlier interview with the Washington Post Mr Northam promised to set up race sensitivity training for state employees, and "take a harder line" on Confederate statues in public places in the state. And Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax is fending off allegations he sexually assaulted two women on separate occasions.

"I am writing to let you know that Justin Fairfax will be asked to step down from the Sanford School Board of Visitors pending the resolution of the serious and deeply distressing allegations that have been made against him", wrote Judith Kelley, dean of the Sanford School, in an email to the Sanford community Friday night.

The statement from Watson's attorney said Fairfax used knowledge of her prior rape to plan his own attack on her in 2000.

Northam said he planned to focus on addressing issues stemming from inequality, including improving access to health care, housing, and transportation.

In a former hub of the American slave trade and the capital of the Confederacy, the political crisis has sparked deeper debate about the treatment of women and how to reckon with Virginia's long, racist past. "And I really think that I'm in a position where I can take Virginia to the next level".

"Ms. Watson shared her account of the rape with friends in a series of emails and Facebook messages that are now in our possession", the statement reads.

Those rebuttals have not satisfied fellow Democrat Patrick Hope, a state delegate who has promised to introduce articles of impeachment when lawmakers reconvene Monday.

Lauren Burke, the Democratic lieutenant governor's spokesperson, told the Post that Fairfax is "calling for an investigation on all of these matters".

"Almost half of Virginians. say Northam should step down, while the same percentage said he should remain in office", the Hill reports.

Northam, now a year into his four-year term, announced his intention to stay at a Friday afternoon Cabinet meeting, according to a senior official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
