Amazon (AMZN) 4th Quarter Earnings: What to Expect

Amazon sales, profit top estimates as retail, advertising soar

Notably, revenue in North American surged 35% year over year to $34.3 billion, while worldwide revenue grew just 13% to $15.5 billion.

Amazon shares bounced around in after-hours trading on Thursday after the e-commerce giant reported better-than-expected revenue and earnings in its crucial holiday quarter, but a lukewarm sales forecast tempered the market's reaction.

"We feel we had a really strong fourth quarter", finance chief Brian Olsavsky said on a call with reporters Thursday. $232.9 billion (crossed the $200 billion threshold for the first time).

Historical context. The company has beaten analysts' earnings-per-share estimates five of the last eight fourth-quarter reports, but it has beaten sales estimates only once, a year ago.

The midpoint of the revenue-growth guidance, 14 percent, would represent the slowest quarterly growth at Amazon since at least 2012.

Amazon Web Services - Amazon's cloud hosting platform that powers a significant chunk of the public internet - generated $7.430 billion United States dollars (roughly $9.75 billion CAD) in Q4 2018.

Last year, Amazon streamlined its ad products so they were less confusing to brands, and folded them under the Amazon Advertising moniker.

In July 2017, the police stated there was no connection between the disappearances of Esen and Kinsman and the three missing men. That was 'Bruce A.' 'Bruce B, ' who was that? "This is something you'd want the world to know", he said.

Amazon's "other" business segment - consisting mainly of its fast-growing advertising business - generated almost $3.8 billion in sales in the quarter, up 97 percent. The company's "other" revenue category, which is mostly advertising, grew 95 percent to $3.39 billion in the quarter. But those results still fell short of Wall Street's expectations, even despite the broadly-popular discount event, Prime Day.

Strength in online sales over the holiday period showed Amazon still has room to grow in its core business and is benefiting from excitement around its new devices, said Ron Josey, an analyst at JMP Securities. For the year, Amazon posted a net income of $10.1 billion, up from $3 billion the prior year.

They still have some breathing room, however, as Facebook this week reported more than $16 billion in ad sales in just the fourth-quarter of previous year, while Google is expected to top $135 billion in ad revenue in 2018 when it reports next week.

The big picture: Amazon revealed that during the holiday season, tens of millions of customers started Prime free trials or started paid memberships.

The answer, Amazon said, is no. Amazon has been expanding grocery delivery from Whole Foods stores, and the service is now active in more than 60 USA cities. After reaching the $1 trillion-mark last September, Amazon saw its shares drop some 25% during the final three months of 2018. Amazon had jumped back above Microsoft Corp., which is No. 2 in cloud computing, as the most valuable publicly traded company, with a market capitalization of US$840.4 billion.

Annual net income increased to $10.1 billion United States dollars (roughly $13.26 billion CAD) in 2018, compared to $3.0 billion USD (roughly $3.94 billion CAD) in 2017.

Making Amazon more profitable still are ad sales. The UK and other countries let them. Building warehouses and data centers around the world, inventing new devices and automating tasks usually done by humans are just some of the places Amazon spends its money.
