UK PM Theresa May survives no-confidence vote

Brexit in Focus

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would bring a vote of no-confidence in the government, which will be debated on Wednesday.

The no-confidence motion is expected to go in May's favour since the critics who voted against the Brexit agreement do not want her government to fall, including the Democratic Unionist Party, which is propping up the minority government.

"The only lesson for them is that they need to sit around one table, opposition and majority, to sort out what is in the national interest", Verhofstadt said.

French President Emmanuel Macron (C) prepares to pose with the president of the European Council Donald Tusk (L), British Prime Minister Theresa May (2-L), the Netherland's Prime Minister Mark Rutte (2-R) and the president of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker (R), as they meet for a working session prior to the G20 Summit on November 30, 2018, in Buenos Aires.

Opening the debate on the no-confidence motion, Corbyn urged May's "zombie government" to stand aside and declared her "Frankenstein" Brexit deal officially dead.

The result of today's vote allows may to keep her post and present a new action plan regarding Brexit, which has been slated for 29 March this year. His party wants a permanent customs union with the EU, a close relationship with its single market and greater protections for workers and consumers.

She has promised to return to parliament on Monday with an alternative Brexit strategy devised through cross-party talks with the opposition.

But with no clear majority in Parliament for any single alternative, there's a growing chance that Britain may seek to postpone its departure date while politicians work on a new plan - or even hand the decision back to voters in a new referendum on Britain's European Union membership.

Political analyst Anand Menon, from United Kingdom in a Changing Europe, said history is being made week after week in the Brexit saga, with the government being held in contempt even as May soldiers on.

"That is what most of the other opposition parties support so she seems to be negating the discussions before they have even started".

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to join House Financial Services Committee
But Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive Democrats who are poised to join the panel have refused to accept corporate donations. But despite Trump's refusal to even entertain a question about her remark, Ocasio-Cortez seems to be calling it a victory.

The Environment Secretary also accused deputy leader Tom Watson of believing that Corbyn is "the worst possible person to lead the Labour Party".

"We must see concessions from the Prime Minister, as well as Jeremy Corbyn, to break the Brexit impasse". May said an election "would deepen division when we need unity, it would bring chaos when we need certainty, and it would bring delay when we need to move forward". He said the PM should move forward with a "no deal" Brexit.

Business groups have also expressed wide alarm at the prospect of a no-deal exit.

It followed more than two years of political upheaval in which May has staked her political reputation on getting a Brexit deal and was the biggest defeat for a government in the House of Commons in modern history.

"I ask members on all sides of the house to listen to the British people who want this matter settled and work with the government to do just that", she added.

Whatever may come next, any plan that involves leaving the European Union will need to cut through the Gordian knot that is Northern Ireland. "We could see 20 or 30 miles of lorry traffic queuing towards Dover, which is the No. 1 port with the Continent".

The pound was flat against the euro with the shared currency buying £0.8872.

While the uncertainty surrounding Brexit remains elevated, many investors think Tuesday night's vote makes it less likely Britain will crash out of the bloc with no deal.

"The issue of the backstop needs to be dealt and we will continue to work to that end". Lawmakers who want to remain close to the European Union disliked it, too, because Britain would be subject to customs and trade rules over which it had no say.

Opening the debate earlier in the day, Mr Corbyn said: 'If a government can not get its legislation through Parliament it must go to the country for a new mandate, and that must apply when it is on the key issue of the day'. But that is unlikely to win over many opponents of the agreement.
