U.S. says China's death sentence against Canadian 'politically motivated'

Federal Government Promises To Intercede On Behalf Of Canadian Sentenced To Death In China

"I will say that it is of extreme concern to us as a government, as it should be to all our global friends and allies, that China has chosen to begin to arbitrarily apply the death penalty, as in this case, facing a Canadian", he told reporters on Monday.

"We expect at a level of principle that not only the death penalty should not be applied but also wherever people are in trouble the rule of law ought be applied fairly", he said.

The two countries have been at odds since early December, when Canadian police arrested Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL], on a US extradition request as part of an investigation into suspected violations of USA trade sanctions.

Meng, chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, is out on bail in Vancouver and faces possible extradition to the U.S.

Hua's comments add to increasingly strained relations between the two countries since Canada detained Meng on December 1, followed soon after by China's arrest of Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur, on allegations they were undermining national security.

Though Schellenberg was arrested in 2014, state media has played up coverage of his case following the deterioration in China-Canada relations.

China's foreign ministry blasted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "irresponsible remarks" after he criticised the death sentence handed to 36-year-old Robert Lloyd Schellenberg.

China and Canada have also since traded new travel advisories, warning their citizens of the risks of travelling to the other country.

The Chinese government is urging citizens to "fully assess the risks of going to Canada for tourism" as diplomatic tensions between the two countries continue to escalate.

Bernard Tomic beats Nick Kyrgios in all Australian temperamental match up
Kyrgios did not seem rattled by the point and laughed it off. "I need a few more days to play and train and hopefully reach 100 per cent".

"We really understand how hard the situation is, and I think the Schellenberg family has our country's sympathy".

Schellenberg had appealed against an original 15-year prison sentence issued in November, but the court in Liaoning province sided with prosecutors at the retrial that the punishment was too light.

Trudeau should "respect the rule of law, respect China's judicial sovereignty, correct mistakes and stop making irresponsible remarks, " foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said. "You should ask the Australian officials if they were happy to see these drugs being imported into their country", she said at her Wednesday press briefing. China has continued to demand Meng's release, as its state media threatened consequences for Canada.

Freeland said she had "a very emotional conversation" with Schellenberg's father on Monday.

Schellenberg's defense lawyer, Zhang Dongshuo, said his client plans to appeal the verdict.

Schellenberg was sentenced to death Monday, following a second trial in China for being an accessory to drug smuggling.

The statement says the discussion included Freeland and Pompeo expressing "their concerns about the arbitrary detentions and politically motivated sentencing of Canadian nationals".

"The best thing for both Canada and China, and frankly for the whole world, is to get past these current difficulties".

Trudeau had also received support from other allies, including the United States, the European Union, France, Germany, Britain and Australia.
