Cruz: People outside DC are not concerned with Russian Federation investigation

President Trump speaks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 Summit in Hamburg in July 2017

That development, first reported by The Washington Post, followed a report in The New York Times that the FBI had earlier begun a counterintelligence investigation on Trump to see whether he had been influenced by Russian Federation when he fired James Comey as FBI director in 2017.

Trump also condemned the question of whether he was a Russian asset when he was asked about it on Saturday during a call in to Jeanine Pirro's Fox News show.

The New York Times report Friday cited unnamed former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation.

Trump replied: "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked".

On Sunday, congressional Democrats said the steps Trump took to keep his conversations secret brought forth uncomfortable questions about the relations between the two men and why the USA president echoed some of Putin's positions.

Though the Trump administration might fight a subpoena by claiming executive privilege, the administration should instead view a demand from Congress as an opportunity to exonerate the president.

USA intelligence agencies have concluded that Moscow led a propaganda and hacking campaign created to tip the 2016 White House race to Trump. Warner accused the White House of being very slow to put in place the penalties.

The Times report published late Friday said in the wake of Comey's firing, "law enforcement officials became so concerned by the president's behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russian Federation against American interests, according to former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation".

Trump's behavior in the days around Comey's May 2017 firing helped trigger the counterintelligence part of the probe, according to the newspaper.

Trump backed off his previous threats to declare a national emergency at the southern border if he can not cut a deal with congressional Democratic leaders.

President Donald Trump's attorney general nominee, William Barr, meets with Senate Judiciary Committee member and Trump confidant Sen.

Since the report emerged, Trump has attacked the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the newspaper but he did not issue a specific denial about working with Russian Federation until Monday.

For opponents of the president, there are no innocent explanations for Trump's actions, which are possible evidence that Trump has colluded with Russian Federation, a question at the heart of the special counsel inquiry. He is also investigating possible obstruction of justice by Mr Trump.

The Times says it is unclear whether Mr Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence angle.

The partial government shutdown is now the longest in history, but Republican strategist Andy Surabian told the New York Times this was just the beginning of a "non-stop political war" that will last until the end of the Trump presidency - if not beyond.

Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times he had no knowledge of the inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn't heard anything, apparently "they found nothing".

The Times report also included references to Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, FBI officials who were having an affair and exchanged text messages critical of Trump during the 2016 campaign.

Now with Democrats in control of the intelligence committee and other chairmanships, there may be a renewed push to try to compel more disclosure by the executive branch, and one beyond just the intelligence panel.
