Trump Cites Indian-Origin Cop's Murder To Make Case For Border Wall

New report reveals the one reason Trump is still refusing to reopen the government

Former American presidents like Roosevelt and Lincoln and Truman in war situations have stretched the law to see how far they could go but this is the first time in American history that a politician is pushing the limits of the Oval Office address to see how far he can take a political gambit via reality television.

With the partial government shutdown going on for over a fortnight now, there is increasing panic in the two camps and both sides are trying to reach out to Americans to explain their position on the stalemate.

Senate Democrats have approved similar funding year after year.

The fact is: President Trump has chosen to hold hostage critical services for the health, safety and well-being of the American people and withhold the paychecks of 800,000 innocent workers across the nation - many of them veterans.

Mr Trump said an as-yet-unratified revamp of the North American Free Trade Agreement would pay for the wall, a claim previously disputed by economists.

Trump long ago tossed away his best opportunity to fund the wall he had implausibly promised Mexico would pay for, rejecting Democratic deals that would have given him a hefty pile of wall money.

And yet after asking the television networks to clear their schedules so he could address the American people on the subject, Mr Trump nearly seemed reluctant to use the word. Current Democratic leaders also voted for border fencing in 2006 and 2013, a change of heart that the president has highlighted multiple times.

But Mr Trump felt he needed more than a string of Tweets to try to break the stalemate with Democrats in Congress who refuse to find the $5.7bn dollars which he has requested.

"How much more American blood will be shed before Congress does its job?" he asked.

CBS said in a statement that the White House told the network that the speech will last no longer than eight minutes.

DeChambeau had said he would take advantage of the new rule that allows the pin to be left in for putts on the green. And I had that chance to make the bogey, which would have been a great bogey, but double was pretty disappointing.

On Thursday he heads to the south-western border.

Schumer offered his view after Trump's speech from the Oval Office.

After the networks agreed to air Trump's address, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer released a joint statement demanding the chance to respond to the president, whose speech they claimed "will be full of malice and misinformation".

Mrs Pelosi said: "The fact is: the women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge". The president alleged that the Democrats in Congress had failed to acknowledge the crisis and refused to provide the border agents with the tools they desperately need to protect families and the nation.

Wielding the bully pulpit, Mr Trump has done nothing since shutting down much of the government on Dec 22 to advance his argument or resolve the dispute. New York City, for example, has the nation's largest population of immigrants living in the country illegally - about 500,000 - and a year ago had only 289 murders among a total population of 8.5 million people, according to preliminary data.

He concluded: "The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a 30-foot wall". In each case, the report said the vast majority of the drugs comes in through existing points of entry, most commonly in cars, which would not be stopped by a border wall.

Framing the debate over the partial government shutdown in stark terms, he declared: "This is a choice between right and wrong".

It seems unlikely that the president said anything on Tuesday that will move the needle with the public at large.

As for congressional Republicans, the speech was a demonstration that Mr Trump is going to use every arrow in his presidential quiver to get his wall.
