Pujara, Pant put Australia to the sword in Sydney

India vs Australia,Cheteshwar Pujara,18th Test century

Pujara's highest score outside India was followed by the biggest of Pant's career, 159 not out, and Ravindra Jadeja's knock of 81.

The 30-year-old's centuries in Adelaide and Melbourne went a long way to giving India a 2-1 series lead and there was relief as well as admiration in the standing ovation he received from the crowd when he finally headed back to the Member's Stand.

India first went Down Under back in 1947-48 under Lala Amarnath's captaincy, and are yet to achieve series triumph there despite eleven attempts. At stumps then, Australia were trailing by 386 runs, with Peter Handscomb (28 not out) and Pat Cummins (25 not out) at the crease.

Eventually the umpires mercifully called the day's play on account of bad light and rain about 90 minutes early, but India had already ripped the heart out of Australia's middle order.

Peter Handscomb and Pat Cummins doing a fix job now. In the third over after the restart, he played on off Jadeja.

The surface that India's batsmen had feasted on for two days was still offering little for the bowlers and the hosts will be cursing themselves for some soft dismissals after a 72-run opening stand.

India have dominated Australia ever since the start of Border-Gavaskar Trophy
The Herald understands Labuschagne was told he would bat at No 3 during the team's final training session on Wednesday. Rahul could have left the delivery, instead he pokes at it and pays the price.

Harris was joined by Marnus Labuschagne and made it to another half-century before lunch, but Australia lost 3-35 in the first hour of the second session in another disappointing collapse.

In another snub to BBL form, one of leading wicket takers in the competition's history Andrew Tye was overlooked in a pace battalion missing Australia's Test quicks. There wasn't much help from the pitch for the two pacers Shami and Jasprit Bumrah (0-43) who started proceedings. Meanwhile, Australia now trails by 459 runs.

Usman Khawaja would have breathed a sigh of relief because he had dropped Pujara when the latter was on 192.

He worked hard to make his second Test 50 in only three innings by caressing a Mitchell Starc delivery through the covers for four. West Indies' Jeffery Dujon was the first player to bring up tons in Manchester and Perth in 1984.

"You're never going to get better batting conditions.it's just mistakes from batsmen".

India´s Kuldeep Yadav (2nd L) celebrates with captain Virat Kohli (L) and teammates after dismissing Australia´s captain Tim Paine during the third day´s play of the fourth and final cricket Test between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 5, 2019.
