Nadal to skip Brisbane International over thigh strain

Injury forces Rafael Nadal to withdraw from Brisbane International

Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Brisbane International on Wednesday due to a strain on his left thigh.

The Spaniard opted not to play his second match at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi last week after tweaking his thigh and is anxious about the risk of exacerbating the problem.

Nadal, the current world number two, has not played a main tour event since a knee problem forced him to retire during his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro in September past year. So I spoke with my doctors there yesterday.

"I did an MRI scan and it shows a small strain on my left thigh".

"My hope is to win the Australian Open, that's the hope always", he told a media conference. "And being honest, I feel myself playing well". "But I really believe that I will be 100 percent ready for Melbourne", said the Spaniard. "Last year, in my opinion last year, my situation, my previous situation of the Melbourne tournament was much worse than last year".

"As you play up the levels, whether it's issues with your game, like if you're not serving as well or if you're not moving as well, the better players exploit that", Murray said.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion was replaced by Japan's Taro Daniel in the second round against France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

"The thing that I don't want to do is suffer more than what I did last year, because if you do (suffer injuries two) years in a row, that mentally kills you", he said.

"As I said before, and especially for the tournament, especially for the fans, that this is the second year that they are not going to have the chance to watch me play here".

The Spanish star endured a hard 2018, playing just nine tournaments before undergoing ankle surgery in November. "For me it's a big goal to be ready for there and I'm going to fight for it", he added.
