Washington DC sues Facebook over privacy scandal

Facebook shares drop as Cambridge Analytica data privacy fallout spreads

The top legal officer in the United States capital city has sued Facebook over privacy violations related to personal data leaked to the Cambridge Analytica consultancy working on Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

Facebook already has been buried in an avalanche of other lawsuits filed in federal and state courts, as well as regulatory investigations in both USA and Europe into whether the company has violated laws by repeatedly allowing unauthorized access to the personal information of the almost 2.3 billion people on its private network.

Washington, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine said Facebook misled users because it had known about the incident for two years before disclosing it. On Friday, for example, the company admitted that some users' photos may have been improperly accessed by third-party apps. Facebook acknowledged the lapse in a blog post but said it had not found evidence of wrongdoing by those partners.

Cambridge Analytica, which worked for U.S. President Donald Trump's political campaign at one point, gained access to personal data from tens of millions of Facebook's users.

According to documents seen by the Times, Facebook allowed Microsoft's Bing search engine to see names of Facebook users' friends without consent and gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read private messages.

Facebook is having an incredibly hard year, rife with controversy and accusations of improper behavior.

Wischnewski also mentioned about times when she reached home to find Rocco playing some romantic music on Alexa-powered device. Rocco the parrot has formed a relationship with his owner's voice-activated Amazon Echo.

It is well known that Facebook makes its money through our personal data and we have realised just how bad that has been.
It also alleges that Facebook was aware in 2014 that the developer wanted to download the information about users' friends but "failed to monitor or audit the app".

It was revealed this week that Facebook's privacy controls had broken down yet again.

As well as this lawsuit, Facebook is being probed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice.

Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee that heard testimony from Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg in September, has previously put forth several potential measures for regulating tech companies. Something like 44% of American adults get their news from Facebook.

"It appears that Facebook has not been honest with Congress or the public about how it treats its users' data", Congressman Frank Pallone, a Democrat, said in a tweet.
