United States senators push resolution to condemn Saudi crown prince over Khashoggi murder

Khashoggi murder: CIA chief Haspel 'to brief Congress'

United States senators have made their first move to hold the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman accountable for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi after they introduced a non-binding resolution that they hope will lead to sanctions on Riyadh.

The dismissed leader of the Palestinian Fatah movement and adviser to the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Dahlan, said that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman would remain in power in the Saudi kingdom for the next 50 years.

Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, who supported the resolution, said last week that the Trump administration's weak response to Khashoggi's murder had damaged the nation's credibility overseas.

Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the most vocal critics of Saudi Arabia who is close to Trump, introduced the Senate resolution with two other Republicans and three Democrats.

So far, President Trump has given the Saudi crown prince the benefit of the doubt about his role in the incident.

"I think the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State are in a bad spot because the president has given this bear hug to MBS and to the entire Saudi regime, so they are bound to carry out his weird policy", Murphy said during a "Morning Joe" interview.

Khashoggi was killed in the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2 by a team of 15 people consisting of Saudi officials who arrived in Turkey for his murder and a cover-up operation, including dismembering Khashoggi's body.

The CIA has reportedly concluded that the crown prince ordered Khashoggi's assassination, though U.S. President Donald Trump has disputed that the agency has made that judgment.

In recent years, the kingdom and Prince Mohammed have cultivated an image of Saudi Arabia as a country on the path to modernization, providing its citizens with greater freedoms, such as permitting women to drive.

The fresh scrutiny of Mattis, often portrayed at home and overseas as a trusted steward of US values during the turbulent times of President Donald Trump, comes on the heels of his implementation of a controversial military order to place troops on the US-Mexico border, a move critics slammed as a political stunt.

Later on November 28, the Human Rights Watch received a report from an informed source indicating that Saudi authorities had tortured a fourth woman activist.

"The reason they don't draw the conclusion that he's complicit is because the administration doesn't want to go down that road, not because there's not evidence to suggest he's complicit", Graham said.

A briefing by Central Intelligence Agency Director Gina Haspel for senators on Tuesday hardened their resolve to act against the prince known as MbS, who has the support of Trump.

Trudeau told reporters Wednesday that he said this "directly" to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman when the two were both in Buenos Aires for the G20 Summit last week. If he were in front of a jury, "he would have a unanimous verdict in about 30 minutes".

"We are continuing to review", Mattis told reporters traveling with him to Canada, the Washington Examiner reported.
