Poland among leaders in fighting global warming: PM

The top four emitters in 2017, which covered 58 per cent of global emissions, were China (27 per cent), the U.S. (15 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent) and India (7 per cent), according to the projection by the Global Carbon Project.

Guterres said in order to achieve that, global emissions from 2010 levels to 2030 must be halved.

The studies concluded that this year the world would spew 40.9 billion tons of carbon dioxide, up from 39.8 billion tons last year.

China continues to remain the largest emitter of the world, with its emissions in 2018 likely to reach 10.3 billion tonnes, an increase of 4.7 per cent from a year ago.

The increases follow a three-year hiatus from 2014-2016 when emissions were stable.

The Global Carbon Budget report blames this year's record fossil fuel emissions on an increase in global coal use, which is expected to surpass its 2013 peak if growth continues.

Rapid deployment of solar and wind power, along with gains in energy efficiency, have been outpaced by growth in demand for freight, personal transport, shipping, and aviation, the research showed.

But it said the U.S. "reiterates its decision to withdraw" from the landmark accord.

Bitcoin recovers slightly after price hits almost two-year low

"The Paris Agreement is fatally flawed because it raises the price of energy for responsible countries while whitewashing some of the worst polluters", said Trump, referring to a global deal on the environment drafted in Paris in late 2015.

For the US, it was a combination of a hot summer and cold winter that required more electricity use for heating and cooling.

The long-held goal would limit global warming to no more than 1.8 degrees from now, with a more ambitious goal of limiting warming to 0.9 degrees from now.

Average global temperatures were 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels and projected to reach 1.5C within two decades at current rates of warming. "Now we're seeing a return to a trajectory of increased emissions, that's largely driven by Asia essentially".

The European Union is set to see a small decline in 2018, and will account for about a tenth of the total. And while countries are using more renewable fuels and trying to reduce carbon from electricity production, emissions from cars and planes are steadily increasing, Le Quere said.

In India, emissions are expected to grow by a solid 6.3 per cent in 2018, pushed by strong economic growth of around 8 per cent per year.

Trying to bring down carbon emissions from human activity is a central goal of the Paris Agreement due to the acknowledgement by experts this is what accelerates climate change, according to CNN.
