China protests arrest of Huawei CFO in Canada, urges release: Embassy

Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

Meng Wanzhou "was arrested in Vancouver on December 1", a statement said.

Wanzhou Meng, the chief financial officer and deputy chairwoman of Huawei Technologies Co., has been arrested in Vancouver and is facing potential extradition to the U.S.as American authorities investigate the company for potential violations of Iran sanctions.

Both The Global And Mail and South China Morning Post previously reported that Meng had been arrested on suspicion of violating the US's trade sanctions on Iran.

"The ban was sought by Ms. Meng". "The company believes the Canadian and USA legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", a spokesperson for the company said.

The spokesman added that Huawei complies with laws and regulations everywhere it operates.

The report said the USA had been keeping a close eye on Huawei's alleged shipping of USA products to Iran and other countries in violation of sanction laws.

Huawei is the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer, and one of China's largest tech firms.

The Justice Department probe, first reported by the Wall Street Journal in April, follows a series of USA actions aimed at stopping or reducing access by Huawei and Chinese smartphone maker ZTE Corp to the US economy amid allegations the companies could be using their technology to spy on Americans.

United States prosecutors were investigating whether Huawei violated USA sanctions on Iran.

Russian Federation in 'material breach' of nuclear arms treaty: NATO statement
Putin said on Wednesday that the US decision to ditch the INF means that USA authorities have decided that the U.S. Ministers also backed calls for the House to have a direct say in what happens if her deal is rejected next week.

In June, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported that United States lawmakers warned the Canadian government that Huawei posed a major cybersecurity risk.

News of Meng's arrest provoked an immediate protest from the Chinese embassy in Canada, demanding the US and its neighbor "rectify wrongdoings" and free Meng.

It is not clear if Meng's arrest is connected to the United States probe into Huawei.

On Wednesday, the New Zealand Government's security agency has blocked telecoms giant Spark from using Huawei in its 5G mobile network upgrade. And perhaps more importantly, USA officials have urged other countries to ban telecom companies from purchasing Huawei equipment.

The New York Times meanwhile said that the company had been subpoenaed by the Commerce and Treasury Departments over alleged violations of Iran and North Korea sanctions.

The news of the arrest broke today.

Skycom tried to evade USA sanctions against Iran and sell Hewlett-Packard computers to the country's largest mobile phone operator in 2010.

Huawei's comments came in response to the FCC's notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) for Protecting Against National Security Threats to the Communications Supply Chain Through FCC Programs.
