Mexico border WAR: '1,000 migrants rush vehicles' after violent clashes

US Mexico border

For the past several weeks, President Donald Trump has warned the migrant caravan members, again reiterating his stance on Nov 26.

United States border patrol agents used tear gas to force the crowd back and shut the crossing - the busiest on America's southern border - for several hours, though it was back open on Monday.

Hundreds of people were peacefully protesting near the USA border in Tijuana, chanting that they aren't criminals, when a smaller group broke off and headed toward the border fence.

Tensions had been growing in Tijuana, and Trump said on Saturday the migrants would have to wait in Mexico until their individual asylum claims were resolved in the United States. "So some people got rocks and threw them because many kids were fainting", he said.

Mexico will likely send a total of around 100,000 Central Americans back home by the end of this year. Migrants in a caravan of Central Americans scrambled to reach the US border, catching rides on buses and trucks for hundreds of miles in the last leg of their journey Wednesday as the first sizable groups began arriving in the border city of Tijuana. Democrats and even some lawmakers in Trump's own party have resisted his calls to fund his proposed border wall. Mexico, following the confrontation, said it plans to deport up to 500 people who attempted to cross the U.S. -Mexico border.

"We would close it and we'll keep it closed if we're going to have a problem". "This is the responsibility of Mexico's government".

Mexican officials said the migrants had taken part in "violent" chaos, which originally began as a peaceful march. I observed as the migrants, pushing baby strollers and wheelchairs with their meager belongings on their backs, streamed across the Tijuana river to the Mexican immigration offices and through fences to neighboring train tracks.

"This morning, CBP was forced to close the San Ysidro Port of Entry to ensure public safety in response to a large number of migrants seeking to enter the USA illegally". News pictures showing children fleeing tear gas prompted sharp criticism from some lawmakers and charities.

President Trump offered Mexico some advice on deporting migrants massed in Tijuana and threatening to storm the USA, telling the neighboring nation in a tweet to send them "back to their countries" by plane or by bus - or face a permanent closure of the border.

The head of the Border Patrol, Carla Provost, also defended the use of tear gas.

Migrant caravan: Mexican officials deny U.S. border deal
It would be a "short-term solution", said Sanchez Cordero, a member of new President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's administration. The White House celebrated the agreement as a sign of an improving relationship with Mexico.

Days before, Guerrero reported that mothers in the caravan she had spoken to had told her that the feared "certain unruly men", such as those who had previously protested at the U.S. -Mexico border fence to be allowed into the country, of hurting their chances of entering by creating a "bad reputation" for the entire group.

Many Democrats have expressed outrage at the agents' use of tear gas, but Judd, a 21-year veteran of the Border Patrol, strongly disagrees.

Some rights advocates and legal experts were concerned that the Trump administration was seeking to exploit the melee.

The mayor of Tijuana has declared a humanitarian crisis in his border city and says that he has asked the United Nations for aid to deal with thousands of Central American migrants who have arrived in the city.

US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, Kevin McAleenan, said 69 migrants were arrested on the California side of the border after trying to cross from Tijuana to the US after tear gas was used to stop them.

"What I saw on the border yesterday was not people walking up to border control agents and asking to seek asylum", Scott said. "Far from helping the caravan, they are hurting it", he said in an interview with broadcaster Milenio. "They grab a child because they think they're going to have a certain status by having a child", he said. Some U.S. officials have put the number higher. The migrants, who are fleeing poverty and violence, have said they would wait there until they could request asylum, despite growing USA measures to tighten the border. "Here's the bottom line: Nobody is coming into our country unless they come in legally".

Trump explained the use of tear gas to the media, saying it's "safe" to use.

"We were deluded into believing that we had already reached the United States, and that they would grant us asylum", Colon told AFP.

US military officials have said they expected troops to be repositioned as the situation developed and changed.
