Ex-Trump campaign chair lied, broke plea agreement: Mueller

Mueller accuses Manafort of breaking plea agreement by lying

Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort repeatedly lied to the FBI and investigators in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office, breaching his plea agreement with the prosecutors, Mueller said in a report to a federal judge.

Mueller said in the filing that after signing the plea agreement: "Manafort committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters". Prosecutors say in a new court filing that after Manafort agreed to truthfully co-operate with the investigation, he “committed federal crimes†by lying about “a variety of subject matters.

Manafort was convicted of various financial crimes in August before reaching an agreement in September to cooperate with Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Manafort's attorneys said in the same filing submitted to U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington that Manafort had met with the government on several occasions and provided information "in an effort to live up to his cooperation obligations".

It's a dire turn for Manafort, who was accused of witness tampering, pleaded guilty to a range of charges laid by Mueller and finally agreed to cooperate to avert the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.

Varadkar: EU and United Kingdom would need a ‘no-deal Brexit deal’
But May has so far failed to convince a sizeable chunk of her own party to vote for the deal with it comes to the Commons. On Thursday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May again defended a draft Brexit deal in the UK Parliament's House of Commons.

The president had defended Manafort in various tweets expressing anger at the special counsel investigation, which he has called a "witch hunt" numerous times.

The special counsel investigating alleged Russian meddling in the United States election said the breach meant there was now no reason to delay sentencing. The president's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, entered into a plea deal with Mueller, while Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, has been providing information to Mueller's team and federal prosecutors in NY, among others, a person familiar with the matter has said.

The charges only relate to Manafort's political consulting with pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine, largely pre-dating his role with the Trump campaign.

He was convicted by a jury in August on tax and bank fraud charges in the other case in Virginia. Except for one aspect of their bank fraud case, in which Manafort appeared to dangle access to the Trump campaign in exchange for a bank loan, the cases did not publicly describe Manafort's work as campaign chairman. He faces multiple years in prison.

The conventional wisdom among legal experts seems to be that Manafort did not care about telling the truth because he's going all in on President Donald Trump pardoning him. He'll be sentenced in February in his criminal case in Virginia, which he took to trial and lost.
