Megyn Kelly won’t return to NBC after defending ‘blackface’ costumes

Megyn Kelly discussing exit with NBC News following controversial blackface comments

Megyn Kelly, the former Fox News Channel personality who made a rocky transition to softer news at NBC, was sacked from her morning show Friday after triggering a furor by suggesting it was OK for white people to wear blackface at Halloween.

'"Megyn Kelly Today' is not returning", NBC News said in a statement.

"An NBC spokesperson has finally said, "'Megyn Kelly Today' is not returning".

Echoing a report by NBC News, which cited a source presumably from within the network, TMZ said Kelly's lawyer Bryan Freedman wanted to meet with NBC executives to negotiate an exit on Friday.

It was just the beginning of what's since become a slew of controversies dogging Kelly since she joined the network. "She was never able to overcome her Fox image". And whatever her next destination is, let's hope she'll go back to her roots and do what she does best; sharp, sometimes biting, political analysis.

By his own admission, NBC chairman Andy Lack ― who led the play for Kelly ― claimed that he "didn't spend a lot of time" looking at her work on Fox. While she is out at NBC, she will reportedly still be paid her full $69 million contract that she would have received over three years. Kelly's nighttime news magazine Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly was a misfire as well, with NBC quietly pulling it off the schedule after just eight airings.

This week, Kelly apologized and said she was sorry for her comments about blackface.

EU warns Italy on budget but walks a fine line
Italy's budget proposal is considered out of line with commitments made earlier, with a proposed deficit of 2.4 per cent. Matteo Salvini , the leader of the League party, called the accusation "surreal".

While at Fox, Kelly cultivated a reputation for toughness and a willingness to challenge conservative orthodoxy. Kelly burnt bridges at Fox after she publicly discussed sexual harassment she said she faced from the late Roger Ailes, the channel's co-founder.

It was not the first time "Today" had faced this kind of drama: The shake-up reminded people of Ann Curry's disastrous 2012 exit, which many blamed partially on her co-host Matt Lauer.

She also gained notoriety for insisting that Santa Claus was white and referring to a "thug mentality" within black communities that led to a hatred of police. "She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day, and I don't know how that got racist on Halloween".

According to several online reports Megyn's show has been cancelled. "But I think she clearly stepped in it, she made a awful mistake, and I was surprised she would make a mistake of that kind. She is one of the biggest advocates for women".

Kelly offered a heartfelt apology to open her show on Wednesday and received a standing ovation from the in-studio audience.

She largely floundered with that soft-news focus, and a pair of awkward and hostile interviews with Hollywood figures Jane Fonda and Debra Messing backfired with bad publicity. Even her hotly contested interview with right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones premiered to a relatively measly 3.5 million viewers, losing out to a rerun of "America's Funniest Home Videos" in the same time slot.
