Facebook Sued in California Over Hack of 50 Million Accounts

Facebook reveals security incident affecting 50 million users

On Friday, Facebook announced that they faced yet another data breach which led to the exposure of as many as 50 million accounts. The prospect of hackers taking control of nearly 50 million Facebook accounts may undermine those assertions.

According to the social networking firm, attackers exploited three vulnerabilities in Facebook's code related to the "View As" feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else.

It's already known that hackers have made use a loophole in Facebook and stolen 5 Crore access tokens.

"I would expect Facebook to publish further details of the breach following a more in-depth assessment, including how long user accounts were compromised prior to the identification of the breach, the impact of the breach on users and what steps have been taken to protect user privacy in the event of future breaches of the social media platform", he said.

The company has also reset the access tokens of the 50 million accounts that were known to have been breached, as well as 40 million accounts that have been subject to a "View As" look-up in the previous year, as a precaution. Facebook has logged out 90 million Facebook users from their accounts.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said engineers discovered the breach on Tuesday, and patched it on Thursday night.

The strict new regulation went into affect in May, and aims to safeguard user data for individuals within the European Union.

One of the bugs was more than a year old and affected how the "View As" feature interacted with Facebook's video uploading feature for posting "happy birthday" messages, said Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of product management.

Access tokens are like digital keys that remind the website - and other linked services - that you're logged in. It adds to the social network's mounting woes in its largest market.

He also said he has received historical levels of defence funding, along with emphasising that United States unemployment was low. It was only the third time in United Nations history that a USA president chaired a Security Council meeting.

On Friday morning, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a press conference regarding the matter.

"We've found and taken down foreign influence campaigns from Russian Federation and Iran attempting to interfere in the US, UK, Middle East, and elsewhere - as well as groups in Mexico and Brazil that have been active in their own country". But it definitely is an issue that this happened in the first place.

Have the attackers stolen your personal information?

Was there any sign of who the attackers were or who they were trying to target?

It's also not yet clear who is behind the attack on Facebook, or whether the attacks were targeted, and the reason behind it. Facebook has now patched the vulnerabilities and revoked the compromised access tokens, forcing affected users to log back in (though their passwords haven't been compromised, the company says) and notifying them about the issue.

The vice-president of product management, Guy Rosen, also spoke on the conference, saying that the company has notified and was working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"The investigation is early, and it's hard to discover who is behind this".

"We don't know if any accounts were actually misused", Zuckerberg said.
