Trump 'totally' supports Brett Kavanaugh, cites 'impeccable' record

President Trump amplified his support Tuesday for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in the face of a sexual assault allegation, saying he feels "terribly" for Kavanaugh and his family.

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from NY, said an FBI investigation is "essential" to prevent the hearing from becoming merely a he said-she said affair. He has questioned why women wait so long to come forward if they are telling the truth.

"I don't think Federal Bureau of Investigation really should be involved because they don't want to be involved", Trump said.

"The important thing is to get this investigated", said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the ranking member (R), speaks during a Senate Judiciary Committee markup meeting on Capitol Hill, Sept. 13, 2018, in Washington.

Meanwhile, Mark Judge, a friend of Kavanaugh's who Ford claims witnessed the assault, said Tuesday he does not wish to testify before the committee. "I think it's likely this will inflame partisan energy on both sides".

Hatch went on to refer Kavanaugh's accuser Christine Blasey Ford as "this woman" and said, "Whoever she is, she's mixed up".

In the end, "I doubt very seriously any minds will be changed by this", says Ross Baker, a political scientist and expert on the Senate at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

The president is facing questions about Kavanaugh amid scrutiny of a woman's claim that the judge sexually assaulted her at a party when they were both in high school.

Anita Hill - whose sex-harassment allegations against Clarence Thomas almost derailed his appointment to the US Supreme Court in 1991 - took a swipe at the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday as it grappled with accusations against a new nominee. "He should testify under oath".

A Judiciary committee statement Sunday accused Democrats of hiding Ford's allegations until the eve of the committee vote.

Hill said she has still never heard from Biden personally but that the apology is not due to her alone.

In a statement issued Friday, Hill said, "I have seen firsthand what happens when such a process is weaponized against an accuser, and no one should have to endure that again". She advised the committee to "not rush the hearings" and to bring in "a neutral investigative body with experience in sexual misconduct cases that will investigate the incident in question and present its findings to the committee".

Ford said in the interview with the newspaper that Kavanaugh threw her down on a bed, grinding his body against hers and trying to pull off her one-piece bathing suit and the clothing she was wearing over it. Ford said when she tried to scream, he put his hand over her mouth.

Inside the White House, plans are not now being made in case Kavanaugh's confirmation unravels, including identifying a potential replacement nominee, according to a source familiar with the nomination process who spoke on condition of anonymity. "But just to make sure the American people and the Senate Judiciary Committee have all the information available when considering this lifetime appointment", said Berenzweig. She said President George H.W. Bush had asked the FBI to investigate Anita Hill's allegations against Thomas. "Brett Kavanaugh and I were friends in high school but I do not recall the party described in Dr. Ford's letter", Judge said. Like Kavanaugh, Thomas denied he had acted inappropriately. Thomas was confirmed, but repercussions were felt the following year when several women Democratic senators were elected and Democrat Bill Clinton won the White House.

In a statement on Monday, Kavanaugh called the allegation by Ford, who is a college professor, "completely false".
