Carolina residents rush for gas as powerful hurricane advances

Florence expected to become a 'major hurricane' as it heads to US

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang said the storm is expected to strengthen to 150 miles per hour just before landfall somewhere along the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic coast Thursday night.

Hurricane Isaac, churning in the mid-Atlantic Ocean with wind speeds of around 75 miles per hour (120 kilometres per hour), is following closely behind Florence.

The center of the hurricane is forecast to move across the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas tomorrow and Wednesday (Sept. 11-12), before approaching the southeastern coast of the USA on Thursday.

Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall on Thursday and will most heavily impact the coastal states of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The move will allow the state to use the National Guard for preparations and recovery if necessary.

We here in North Carolina are bracing for a hard hit.

"Florence has continued to rapidly strengthen", the NHC said.

He said: "They are getting ready".

A story of this magnitude can cause cause catastrophic damage due to storm surge and destructive winds.

"You see the eye of the storm but you also see this darker red color", explained FOX 13's meteorologist Dave Osterberg, pointing to the enhanced satellite image.

The veteran receiver had 9 receptions for 142 yards, and of course the 75-yard touchdown on 3 and 10 that gave Green Bay the lead. Bears fans were rather impressed too, as we knew they would be when the contract holdouts were taking place a few weeks ago.

Most of the projected paths show Florence making landfall in North Carolina.

But the season is just now peaking, and Hurricanes Florence, Isaac, and Helene are a stark reminder that we are not out of the woods yet.

In Virginia, home to the world's largest sea base, the USA navy has ordered all ships to sea in preparation for the storm, where they can more safely ride out the violent wind and waves.

Earlier Monday, coastal communities in North Carolina ordered evacuations, and SC ordered evacuations for its entire coastline.

Food, bottled water, flashlight batteries and plywood flew off the shelves at stores throughout the mid-Atlantic, and in coastal Charleston, SC, city officials were handing out sandbags to residents.

Heavy rain in the Washington area over the weekend has already led to flooding in historic Alexandria, Virginia, and the National Weather Service issued a flood watch for part of the Potomac River.

The US military said it was sending an advance team to Raleigh, North Carolina, to coordinate with state and local authorities.

"Unfortunately we have some experience", Gamecocks athletic director Ray Tanner said Saturday. This map shows the estimated arrival time of tropical storm force winds.

Issac is expected to gain strength in the next days, but then weaken by the middle of the week when it approaches the Caribbean.
