Probe of NY Times after critical anonymous column

Trump White House

"It's national security", the president said on Air Force One, on the way to a rally in North Dakota Friday.

"I think it is a national security matter", said Pres. Trump.

Trump also took aim at a book by investigative journalist Bob Woodward which, like the incendiary unsigned piece in The New York Times, offered a damning portrayal of the inner workings of his administration, sparking yet another White House crisis and putting the president on the defensive. If the person has a high-level security clearance, Trump said, "I don't want him in those meetings".

One of President Trump's fiercest critics on daytime television - Whoopi Goldberg of ABC's "The View" - told her audience this week that he's been turned into a "victim" by The New York Times' anonymous hit-piece.

As the initial scramble to unmask the writer proved fruitless, attention turned to the questions the article raised, which have been whispered in Washington for more than a year: Is Trump truly in charge, and could a divided executive branch pose a danger to the country?

While Woodward does not name his sources, he says he spoke with many people now or formerly working for Trump, discussing not just the president's personality but also major policy debates regarding North Korea and Afghanistan.

So far, campaign chairman Paul Manafort; Mr Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen; Deputy campaign manager Rick Gates and National security adviser Michael Flynn have all pled or been found guilty.

"I don't see how we can do it", said Giuliani, who has repeatedly expressed concern about the risk of Trump committing perjury.

Russia Launches Airstrikes in Syria's Rebel-Held Idlib
Rescue workers accused regime forces of killing more than 40 people with "poisonous chlorine gas" in the town of Douma in April. Numerous residents are rebels and civilians who were bussed out of other areas as they came back under Syrian regime control.

"That's not a common word, 'lodestar.' Not a lot of people use that word", Kimmel said.

"We are disappointed, but not surprised, that the paper chose to publish this pathetic, reckless, and selfish op-ed", Sanders said in a statement.

In the piece, the author, whose identity the Times is withholding, wrote "I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations". The Times stood by its story and dismissed a Trump attorney's demand for an apology and retraction.

Trump's lawyers and supporters have argued that as president he is empowered not only to hire and fire whomever he chooses but that he can also inject himself into law enforcement matters.

"With nothing but positive news about the economy and the job market, all of their fears have come true", Borelli told The Post.

Even David Frum, George W. Bush's former "Axis of Evil" speechwriter and a very smart if somewhat doctrinaire "free markets-über alles" conservative, has been looking good by warning grandiloquently about Trump's authoritarianism.
