Could 'soon' impose tariffs on $200bn in Chinese goods, says Trump

Trump signals escalation of trade war with China, says he has tariffs ready on another $267-billion of imports

The president's comments came after Apple warned this week that Trump's proposed tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods would affect a host of its products, including Apple Watch and Apple AirPods.

Earlier on Friday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told Bloomberg Television the administration would evaluate public comments before making decisions on the $US200 billion tariff list. "The notion that the president is going to add an extra $267 billion worth of tariffs is grossly irresponsible and possibly illegal", said Jose Castaneda, spokesman for the Information Technology Industry Council, which argues that the tariffs are not permitted under US trade law. "And I hate to say this, but behind that is another $267bn ready to go on short notice if I want".

"That changes the equation", he added.

Trump initiated the trade war to punish Beijing for what it says are China's predatory tactics to try to supplant USA technological supremacy. Additional U.S. tariffs are certain to trigger Chinese retaliation, though China's smaller volume of American imports means that it can't match Trump's tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Apple said the tariffs would raise the cost of its USA operations and put it at a disadvantage to foreign rivals.

"We'll continue to talk to China", he said at the White House on Wednesday.

Levying duties on all Chinese purchases would hit "every aspect of our American lifestyle - so the clothes that we put on our back, the food that we eat, the cars that we drive, theshoes that we wear", Hun Quach, vice president of worldwide trade for the Retail Industry Leaders Association, said by phone.

Now, Ramos has come on his defence and says that he is really concerned about the hatred Liverpool supporters have on him. We want to absorb Enrique's knowledge."It is a new coach which always demands more attention".

Washington has long criticised China's huge trade surplus with the United States and has demanded Beijing reduce it.

In light of such a US agenda, China should "maintain strategic determination" and "take care of our own matters", Long Guoqiang, vice president of the State Council's Development Research Center, wrote in the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party. "But right now, we just can't make that deal", he said.

In its letter this week to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Apple said that "because all tariffs ultimately show up as a tax on United States consumers, they will increase the cost of Apple products that our customers have come to rely on in their daily lives". "In the meantime, we are taking in billions of dollars of taxes coming in from China, and with the potential of billions and billions of dollars more taxes coming in".

At the same time, Apple is already using components sourced from USA manufacturers in some of its products.

"We are still talking with China on a number of issues".

Trump has already imposed 25% tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods, mostly industrial machinery and intermediate electronics parts, including semiconductors.
