British Airways hack: Cyber attack and compensation details revealed

British Airways passengers may have had their personal and financial information compromised if they booked between August 21 and September 5

International Consolidated Airlines Group SA said Thursday that the breach affected customers who booked flights with British Airways between August 21 and September 5, and that it was investigating the incident.

Chief executive Alex Cruz says the company is "100% committed" to compensating customers who have had financial information stolen.

Consumer advice website MoneySavingExpert says affected customers should first seek advice from their bank, then monitor bank and credit card statements closely for signs of possible fraudulent activity. However, the airline also confirmed that no passport or travel details were stolen.

BA said the breach took place between 22:58 BST on 21 August and 21:45 BST on 5 September.

"The breach has been resolved and our website is working normally", it said in a statement on Thursday night.

British Airways have advised customers to contact their banks or card providers.

Britain's government said authorities including the National Cyber Security Centre and the National Crime Agency, part of the country's police, were piecing together what happened. Customers who are due to travel are able to check-in online as usual. If the organization can not identify the persons affected by the breach, it would make sense that a public announcement of this magnitude to count as notification.

The three countries have backed the Astana process for Syria and agreed to establish four de-escalation zones including Idlib . The presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey will hold talks on Syria in Tehran on Friday. "Don't let that happen!" he tweeted .

A third party detected "unusual activity" and notified British Airways, Gizmodo reports, so there may be an independent report on the details in the future.

It added: “We take the protection of our customers data very seriously.”.

"I've not heard anything from them on this and I've just had to cancel the card I used".

Around 380,000 card payments were "compromised", it said.

Another BA customer, Stephanie Jowers, said she contacted the airline hours before the hack was announced to query a suspicious charge on her account but was not informed it could have been compromised.

Shares in BA's parent, International Airlines Group, fell 3 percent in early trading.

European data privacy laws introduced in May ratchet up the level of penalties that can be levied on companies if they are found in breach of such rules.
