Hall wins Women's British Open for 1st major title

Pornanong Phatlum

England's Georgia Hall produced a scintillating five-under-par 67 in the final round to clinch victory at the Ricoh Women's British Open in Lancashire on Sunday.

The key stretch came when Hall made three birdies in four holes beginning at the 13th and took a one-stroke lead when she rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt at the 16th.

"I was lucky to hold the golf club", she said of the nerves that suddenly made their presence felt at the last.

Georgia was born during the 1996 Masters won by English golfer Nick Faldo at Augusta, Ga.

Named in honor of a famous Masters victory, Georgia Hall has her hands on one of the big trophies in women's golf at the age of 22.

Hall was able to enjoy the walk down the 18th - by then she had a three-shot lead and she played for a safe bogey.

The Bournemouth golfer is just the third home victor since it became a major in 2001, following Karen Stupples (2004) and Catriona Matthew (2009).

"When I was nine years old I used to say "this for the British Open" and to have that experience today was just unbelievable".

Phatlum's advantage grew by a shot as she sunk a collection of fine putts for three birdies in a row, but Hall matched up to make two birdies of her own and stay in contention.

Manchester United's move for Barcelona's Yerry Mina cancelled
Both of those links strangely came about after the pair had enjoyed strong performances at the World Cup . Old Trafford is running out of time to find an upgrade over Chris Smalling and/or Phil Jones.

Cheered on by a large gallery, Hall finished at 17-under 271, becoming the second English player to win the championship after Karen Stupples in 2004.

Behind Phatlum in the lead, two-time major victor So Yeon-Ryu from South Korea is third, while Japan's Marmiko Higa is in a tie for fourth. I was loving it deep down, hitting the shots under pressure. He had a four-shot lead and faced a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would only determine his margin of victory. "I'm not allowed to show any emotion because if I show I'm happy that's not right", dad Wayne said.

★ Now her Cinderella story is set to inspire other young sportspeople wanting to get a taste of world-class action.

"My long game wasn't quite on it today but my putter saved me and I'm just going to go out there and try to play every shot as it comes tomorrow".

"I think I will be a bit more relaxed because I've been there before but it won't be easy because it's the British Open".

PGA - Justin Thomas took all the drama out of the final World Golf Championship at Firestone, never letting anyone closer than two shots and closing with a 1-under 69 to win the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, for his third title this season.

Australia's Minjee Lee was very much in the firing line for much of the week but a final round of 75 saw her eventually finish in a share of 10th place.

A birdie at No. 10 put him three shots behind, but Johnson bogeyed the last hole for a 64 and shared third with Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark. "He's one of the greatest players of all time", Perry said.
