Sen. Orrin Hatch throws colorful terms at Democrats oppose Supreme Court nominee

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh meets with congressional leaders in Washington on July 24

Chris Coons of DE said at a hearing Wednesday that the Senate should receive even more documents than what Grassley had requested.

Republicans say Democrats are seeking to review what could be as many as 900,000 pages on Kavanaugh from his tenure in the George W. Bush administration as an associate White House counsel as a stall tactic. "Kavanaugh before the midterm elections", and that "the George W. Bush Presidential Library is lending its resources to processing Kavanaugh records in a bid to help expedite the release of the records Grassley and his fellow Republicans have requested".

National Archives General Counsel Gary Stern pointed out that this request far exceeded past document requests for other Supreme Court Justice candidates.

Orrin Hatch criticized the partisan fighting surround the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Following the news, a GOP Judiciary Committee aide was quick to put out a statement promising the panel would proceed apace with the original confirmation timeline.

There are two separate reviews of documents happening simultaneously: One by the Bush team and another by the National Archives.

Senate Democratic leaders have promised to fight Kavanaugh's nomination, which requires Senate confirmation.

Hatch said he's "sick and tired" of the partisanship and that Kavanaugh would ultimately be confirmed.

Once Obama announced the nomination, however, Hatch joined the rest of the Republican Party in refusing to hold confirmation hearings for Garland, saying that the nominee should be chosen after the 2016 election, and not by a president who was on his way out of office. "Mr. McConnell made clear in multiple phone calls with Mr. Trump and the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, that the lengthy paper trail of another top contender, Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, would pose difficulties for his confirmation", The New York Times reported.

Any delay could mean that Kavanaugh, if ultimately approved by the Republican-led Senate, could still miss the October 1 start of the Supreme Court's term and that the final confirmation vote could take place close to the November 6 USA congressional elections.

Democrats also want the National Archives to release documents relating to Kavanaugh's job as White House staff secretary, a position in which he acted as a gatekeeper for all information that reached Bush's desk. "I think they will have a good sense of what is out there on Kavanaugh".

The documents being compiled are only the initial request from Republicans. The archives can prioritize their review of those records.

"I'm exhausted of partisanship and frankly, we didn't treat their candidates for these positions the way they're treating ours", Sen. Kavanaugh was nominated July 9.

Yet in a potential complication for Republican hopes to hold confirmation hearings next month, the National Archives warned Thursday that it would not be able to fulfill the GOP's request for documents until October.
