Mnangagwa has large lead in Zimbabwe presidential election - electoral commission

Robert Mugabe's old party wins Zimbabwe election without him

Mnangagwa has called on Zimbabweans to "desist provocative declarations and statements".

Opposition MDC party supporters protest in the streets of Harare during clashes with police on August 1.

HARARE, Zimbabwe-Police raided the offices of Zimbabwe's main opposition, while the party's leader said he wouldn't accept the result if President Emmerson Mnangagwa were declared the victor of Monday's election.

President Mnangagwa blamed the MDC Alliance leadership for the "violence and hooliganism", and ordered it to recall its protestors.

Mnangagwa and his ruling ZANU-PF party also accused the opposition of inciting the violence.

In an indication of the growing tension, a crowd of about 100 MDC supporters gathered outside a Harare hotel where election results were being announced but police blocked the entrance to the building, a Reuters witness said.

"The population wants the presidential election results and they believe the electoral commission is delaying as it cooks the numbers", he said.

Police claimed that around 4,000 opposition supporters were "besieging" the city centre carrying iron bars and stones while the opposition said they were not responsible for the demonstrations.

Zimbabwean police patrolled the streets of the capital, Harare, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa on Thursday ratcheted up pressure over the country's election count, saying he had won the presidential vote and that the result was being rigged.

Citing the ongoing investigation, the company declined to comment and referred all inquiries to the NTSB. Others killed included 65-year-old William Bright and his wife, Janice, 63, of Higginsville, Mo.

The country's Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu announced a state of emergency throughout the country. The country's landmark vote - the first since veteran autocrat Robert Mugabe was ousted a year ago - turned bloody Wednesday when troops opened fire on demonstrations against alleged electoral fraud, leaving three people dead.

TRT World spoke to Harare-based journalist Columbus Mavhunga for the latest. "This is not an election it is a disgrace on our country", one young man, Colbert Mugwenhi, said.

Human rights activists and some global observers, meanwhile, criticised the military for opening fire on unarmed civilians in what they said was a disproportionate reaction to the protests and rioting.

"Mr Mnangagwa knows it, that he has lost this election", he told reporters.

Instead, observers from the Commonwealth, a group of mainly former British colonies that Mnangagwa had hoped to rejoin, did not mince words in condemning the military's conduct.

On Thursday, troops cleared the streets of the capital, despite calls from foreign governments and worldwide organisations for calm and for political leaders to show restraint.

Britain called for "calm and restraint", urging "political leaders to take responsibility.at this critical moment", while Amnesty International said the "people must be guaranteed their right to protest". "We thought they were our savior in November but they fooled us", said newspaper vendor Farai Dzengera, saying that the brief dream of an end to decades of repression was over.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission by law has until Saturday to release the final election tally. Security forces also used tear gas and water cannon at them. TRT World's Reagan Des Vignes reports.

The death toll from a crackdown by troops on protesters following Zimbabwe's disputed election has doubled to six, police said Thursday.

The opposition, human rights activists and worldwide election observers condemned the "excessive" force used against protesters and appealed to all sides to exercise restraint.
