Wimbledon: Men and women should both play best of three sets

Angelique Kerber

Serena Williams won't be going home with another Wimbledon title this year.

Kerber said of her win: "It's just a dream come true".

"I know I had to play my best tennis against a champion like Serena". There is absolutely no doubt that Williams has her eye on surpassing Margaret Court's record, but it will have to wait - but the day is coming.

With the Duchesses of Sussex and Cambridge in the Royal Box and Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton and Anna Wintour among those supporting Williams from her box, the stage seemed set for sport's most famous mother to write another remarkable chapter.

Angelique Kerber shocked seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams to win her first Grand Slam at SW19. Getting to the final so soon after her pregnancy was a really incredible thing. I was really hoping to get this far...

"We just wanted her to survive-10 months later, she's in the #Wimbledon final".

Williams who had hit 44 aces enroute to the final, managed just four today as Kerber's powerful forehand thrusts occasionally passed her racket even before she could react.

As the 30-year-old German was quick to admit on Saturday evening, her victory at SW19 was in large part down to the influence he has had.

Apparently, his previous boss Jose Mourinho who is now managing Manchester United , is also interested in procuring his services. Interest first seemed to arrive from Manchester United - with Jose Mourinho keen on being reunited with the 29-year-old.

Kerber, who finished runner-up to Serena two years ago, became the first German player to lift the women's trophy in 22 years after Graf won her last and seventh title in southwest London.

She recovered from 2-0 down to lead 3-2, clinching the fifth game with a 125mph ace, the fastest serve of the women's tournament.

Much of the tennis world reached out to congratulate Kerber, including her Hopman Cup partner Alexander Zverev. In 2016, she beat Williams in the final of the Australian Open and again triumphed in NY to become the game's oldest first-time No. 1. Yet, Williams' showed an huge degree of maturity and good sportsmanship as she complimented her opponent, thanked her fans and supporters, and laid the truth down without reservation in front of a packed building and an audience of millions watching around the world. All she could do was smile.

Kerber made only five unforced errors the entire match, 19 fewer than Williams.

It was Rafael Nadal's 52nd match against Novak Djokovic, a rivalry dating back to 2006.

"It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed", Williams said. "I look forward to continuing to be back out here and do what I do best". She continued: "I have so much to look forward to".

"So I think these two weeks have really showed me that, okay, I can compete".
