Israel pounds Gaza in most violent daytime assault since 2014

Palestinian resistance group Hamas agreed to a ceasefire with Israel

In the other direction "more than 60 rockets" were fired at southern Israel from Gaza, the Israeli military said, of which "approximately 10 rockets were intercepted".

Hamas had launched repeated mortar and rocket attacks from the coastal enclave in southern Israel.

Mr Netanyahu said: "The IDF has struck Hamas with the hardest blow since Operation Protective Edge and we will increase the strength of our attacks as necessary".

A cease-fire that ended a 24-hour round of fighting between Israel and Hamas appeared to be in effect despite warnings from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of incendiary kites and balloons from Gaza. "If Hamas doesn't get our message today, it will tomorrow".

Hours later, the military launched a series of air strikes in Gaza.

The military said its jets targeted a Hamas tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip early Saturday as well as other military compounds. Health officials said the two people killed were a father and his son. Hamas said it would investigate.

Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesperson for the militant group Hamas, said the rocket attacks were retaliation for Israeli air strikes.

In an interview with the Ynet news portal, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz insisted that it was Israel's "strong response" to the rocket fire over the weekend that compelled Hamas to seek a ceasefire.

Among the targets was a Hamas battalion headquarters in Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip where the IDF said it had hit an urban warfare training compound, ammunition storage depots and command centers.

Three Israelis were reportedly injured when one of the rockets landed on a residential home. "Hamas will have to understand that there is a price to be paid".

The two Palestinians killed were aged 15 and 16, caught in an Israeli strike on a building they were near in the west of Gaza City, the enclave's health ministry said. Nearby houses were damaged. The Al-Azhar university said its classrooms and the dentistry college lab were also damaged.

Gaza is home to two million Palestinians. 'We have no intention to harm anyone who is not a terrorist, ' he said. "Everybody needs to take a step back".

A Palestinian man and his son were also killed in an explosion on Sunday in Gaza City, but police said it was not the result of Israeli fire. A 20-year-old struck by gunfire Friday during the protests in the southern Gaza Strip had also died of his wounds. the ministry said, while a further 220 Palestinians were wounded in protests along the frontier.

Weekly clashes at the Israel-Gaza border have kept tensions at a high for months.

Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007.

Earlier in the day, during the weekly Great March of Return protest, an IDF officer was moderately injured by a grenade thrown from the Gaza Strip. "Showing restraint creates an escalation in violence", Bennett said.
