Canada announces billions of dollars in tariffs against US

Conservative MP Maxime Bernier talks with media in Ottawa on Wednesday

According to the Canadian Press, Trudeau will be skipping the Parliament Hill Canada Day festivities and will instead be hitting the road, making stops in two cities where the tariffs are set to impact major industries: a steel refinery in Regina, and a food processing plant in Leamington, Ont. once used by Heniz.

Canada hit back at the United States on Friday with retaliatory tariffs on $12.6 billion in American goods, including summer barbecue essentials such as orange juice, ketchup and bourbon. Canada will apply a 25 percent tariff on steel products, and 10 percent on aluminum and consumer goods.

Canada, Europe and Mexico fear that the Trump administration could next follow through on threats to impose tariffs on automobile imports.

U.S. President Donald Trump has specifically targeted Canadian steel and aluminum makers with tariffs of 25 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, on imports from Canada, justifying the move on the basis of national security.

Freeland said they had no other choice and called the tariffs regrettable.

Chrystia Freeland spoke as officials unveiled a C$2bn (£1.5bn) package to support the country's steel and aluminium industries.

The U.S. embassy in Ottawa said it had no immediate comment.

Ottawa has proposed tools to offer financial aid to the companies affected by the tariffs.

Offering up to $250 million in new support through the Strategic Innovation Fund to help bolster the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturers and better integrate the Canadian supply chain of steel and aluminum.

The latter move is seen as a major threat to Canadian growth and to the North American auto sector, since USA carmakers rely heavily on supply chains that include its two neighbours. Working in partnership with business associations, this will include new "export readiness" grants.

Republican-leadership backed immigration bill goes down in flames
Jeff Denham, R-Calif., from districts with large numbers of Hispanic voters, helped force Ryan to stage immigration votes. According to GovTrack, 112 Republicans denied the measure.

"We support open and free trade", said the chamber. "My concern, as an industry player that exports 90 per cent of what it produces to the USA, is viewing the progressive destruction of my value chains in the U.S". The levies will remain in effect until the US eliminates its tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. "But from the USA perspective, it took the threat of tariffs to do that, to prod Canada toward that goal".

Canadians, however, are overwhelmingly in favour of the retaliation.

The former's tariffs on US products such as apples, cranberries, whiskey, pork products and cheese were introduced on June 5, while the 28-country European bloc introduced a levy on more than $3 billion worth of USA goods on June 29.

"The Government of Canada supports our country's steel and aluminum workers and their families".

Canada would "not back down" in the face of new USA tariffs on steel and aluminium, according to the country's foreign minister.

"We need to stand up for Alberta businesses, for workers".

"Canada's aluminum and steel industries are vital to our economic prosperity and support well-paying middle class jobs".

Ryder says the United States vehicle manufacturers have told their government they do not want tariffs.

Since then, the Tories have launched their own "defend local jobs tour", to hear from workers and businesses impacted by the tariffs and threats of further trade action; while the NDP got unanimous consent from all sides in the House of Commons to pass a motion backing Canadian steel, aluminum, and supply management sectors, while condemning "disparaging ad-hominem statements by US officials". Of critical importance to my riding and all affected Canadian organizations, is the announcement of up to $2 billion to defend and protect the interests of Canadian workers and businesses in the steel, aluminum and manufacturing industries.
