Apple and Samsung settle patent case once and for all

The Apple vs Samsung iPhone-copying lawsuit is finally over

In 2012, a USA jury awarded California-based Apple $1.05 billion in damages for the copied features, which included design elements like the screen that displays icons in a grid.

How much, if anything, Samsung must now pay Apple under Wednesday's settlement could not immediately be learned.

The verdict was reached after the US Supreme Court issued a 2016 ruling that determined a portion of earlier damages awarded to Apple needed to be re-examined.

Samsung paid $548 million of the $1.05 billion owed to Apple in 2015, but appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the $399 million decision.

Last month, a California jury determined that the size of the reward should be $539 million, a decision that raised objections from Samsung.

Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy S series back in 2010, with a lawsuit following less than a year later. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

"Whereas the court has been advised by the parties that the above-entitled action has been settled, all remaining claims and counterclaims in this case are hereby dismissed with prejudice", US District Court Judge Lucy Koh wrote.

A Samsung spokeswoman declined to comment.

Apple had sought more than $2bn in damages from its South Korean competitor.

"We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers. Apple ignited the smartphone revolution with iPhone and it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design", Apple said. The conflict between Samsung and Apple surrounding the alleged design infringement started in 2011.

"This settlement marks the official end of the 'smartphone patent wars, '" said Brian Love, an assistant professor at the Santa Clara University School of Law.

Apple originally pursued to obstruct Samsung phones from the market, but the technology at debate has for a long time obsolete, and the battle since then has predominantly about money. Samsung overtook Apple to become the world's No. 1 smartphone maker in the third quarter of 2011 - four years after Apple came up with the world's first smartphone.
