World Cup Group D match report Iceland v Croatia 26 June 2018

Croatia's players celebrate their victory at the end of their Russia 2018 World Cup Group D match against Argentina at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod

Luka Modric and Perisic were the two talents retained from the Argentina victory to give Croatia some elite steel in midfield, as well as the winning penalty from Perisic, and there's no reason to think a win over Denmark next up can't propel them further.

Croatia emerged from their third match at Russian Federation 2018 with their 100% record intact, as two second half goals canceled out an Icelandic penalty sends them into the knockout stages as Group D winners. Gylfi Sigurdsson levelled with a penalty but Ivan Perisic grabbed a last-gasp victor.

Fielding a side filled with reserves, Croatia ended Iceland's first ever Fifa World Cup run with a 2-1 win in Rostov-on-Don.

Everton's Sigurdsson tested Lovre Kalinic from a free-kick, while Birkir Bjarnason, who suffered a nosebleed early on, had shots blocked in quick succession.

Iceland reacted swiftly. Sverrir Ingason forced Kalinic into another spectacular save seconds before his header shaved the top of the bar.

In the second half Croatia stepped up a level and Badelj struck the bar with a deflection.

Unlike in their first two matches against Argentina and Nigeria where they were more solid at the back, it was Iceland who were on the front foot and had the best of the chances against the Croats.

England dare to dream after record win
The next tiebreaker is fair play - i.e. the amount of yellow and red cards accumulated by a team throughout the group stage. Kane was pleased with the manner of victory but cautioned there's still a long way to go if England are to lift the trophy.

Iceland know they need to win and they need goals.

They were rewarded in the 76th minute when second-half substitute Dejan Lovren handled the ball and Sigurdsson rifled the resulting penalty into the roof of the net.

Iceland pushed forward, and threw men forward in search of a victor which looked increasingly like it would send them through.

Croatia kept its flawless record at the 2018 FIFA World Cup while sending Iceland home on Tuesday.

Hallgrimsson cut his teeth in worldwide management as assistant to Swede Lars Lagerback, who steered Iceland to the Euro 2016 finals, where they beat England in the last 16 but fell to host nation France at the quarter-final stage.

Iceland's Gylfi Sigurdsson became the second player to have scored and missed a penalty at the 2018 World Cup, after Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Iceland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson admitted his "proud" team's "batteries" were on empty following a 2-1 World Cup-ending loss to Croatia on Tuesday.
