As Turkey votes, Erdoğan eyes new term

Erdogan expects Turkey’s development level to reach the levels of Russia, US

But the leading opposition party said it believes the results for the presidential elections are incomplete and may go to a second round.

Supporters of presidential candidate of the Republican People's Party (CHP) protest at the CHP headquarters after the results of the Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24, 2018 in Ankara.

In the parliamentary election, the AK Party leads with 54 percent of the vote, with 8.7 percent of the ballot boxes opened.

Unofficial results broadcast on Turkish television also gave his ruling party and its alliance partner a majority in parliament.

Voters are flocking to polling centres today to cast ballots in an election that will complete Turkey's transition to a new executive presidential system, a move approved in a controversial referendum a year ago.

Though he argued his new elite presidency will better enable him to tackle the nation's economic problems such as the plummet of the Lira and Kurdish rebels in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. Earlier, he accused Anadolu Agency of reporting votes from areas that favored Erdogan to undermine opposition morale.

Experts said the key for the People's Alliance to get enough seats lies in the hand of the Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party.

Meanwhile, Erdogan's ruling AK Party had 45.18 percent and its Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) ally had 11.78 percent in Turkey's parliamentary elections, with 61.1 percent of votes counted, according to CNN Turk and other local broadcasters.

"Even though we could not reach out goal in parliament, God willing we will be working to solve that with all our efforts in the People's Alliance", Erdogan said.

North Korea ‘total denuclearization’ started; officials see no new moves
Past reunions, some televised, have often unleashed floods of tears, with face-to-face encounters ending in painful separations. The United States led a group of 16 nations in fighting alongside South Korea against North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union.

More than 59 million Turkish citizens, including 3 million expatriates, were eligible to vote.

Meanwhile, Erdogan's main rival, opposition candidate Muharrem Ince, has been drawing large crowds of support and is expected to take the election into a second runoff vote with Erdogan.

Opposition parties and NGOs had deployed up to half a million monitors at ballot boxes to try to prevent possible electoral fraud.

Ince, speaking just after polls closed, warned civil servants involved in the vote count to do their jobs "abiding by the law" and without fear, suggesting they were under pressure by the government.

Following the failed coup, Turkey has been under a state of emergency for almost two years and has seen a widespread crackdown on alleged supporters of Gulen.

But he reckoned without Mr Ince, a former physics teacher and veteran CHP lawmaker, whose feisty performance at campaign rallies has galvanised Turkey's long-demoralised and divided opposition. This state restricts some freedoms and allows the government to bypass parliament with decrees.

The operation, which focused on the central Turkish city of Konya and was spread over 31 provinces, comes ahead of Sunday's presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey. "This is going to be a united Turkey".

Critics, including the European Union, which Turkey still nominally aspires to join, say Erdogan has used the crackdown to stifle dissent. Turkey says the measures are necessary to combat threats to national security.
