Incredibles 2 smashes animated-movie opening weekend record

Incredibles 2

Incredibles 2, the animated Disney blockbuster that picks up where the original movie left off 14 years ago, features a sequence with the villain Screenslaver that features bright flashing lights.

The question of whether the Incredibles sequel waited too long to come out has just been answered thanks to a whopping opening weekend haul in the USA that has propelled it into the top 5 opening hauls for superhero movies.

It looks like Pixar and Disney's Incredibles 2 will make a record-breaking $175 million-plus domestic release, which will be the largest box office debut ever for an animated film, as well as one of the 10 biggest openings for any movie, the Hollywood Reporter shares.

Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Catherine Keener, Sophia Bush, and Brad Bird also lend their voices to the film, which Bird wrote and directed. After the film opened Friday, some theatergoers posted on social media that the superhero cartoon could trigger seizures in people with epilepsy, migraines or chronic illness. The movie's $180 million debut blows away expectations, which placed it somewhere around $150 million, and the extremely positive audience reaction suggests that it will have strong legs in the weeks to come. It tells the story of childhood pals (led by Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner) who keep up a game of cross-country tag for decades, sometimes playing at the oddest of moments.

ONCE AGAIN, the usual rules just don't apply when it comes to Pixar.

14 years ago, the first Incredibles movie was released to a very healthy $70 million opening weekend in the United States box office, but the sequel has opened to an incredible $180 million. The Star Wars spin-off has been something of a commercial disappointment compared to other recent movies in the long-running franchise, and has only made $192 million after four weeks in theaters. The Warner Bros. pic is sitting at a 57% Rotten Tomatoes rating with a B+ CinemaScore.
