Brexit deal: 'Meaningful vote' battle to resume in Lords

Theresa May’s frantic search for the perfect Brexit compromise

"But as we do that, of course we have been listening to concerns about the role of Parliament, but we need to make sure that Parliament can't tie the government's hands in negotiation and can't overturn the will of the British people".

Mr Wood was reflecting on a tumultuous week of votes in the House of Commons, which saw Labour and Tory MPs rebel against their parties on key legislation.

Ministers are seeking approval for the final wording of the legislation that will end Britain's membership of the European Union next year, but have fallen into a bitter row with pro-European lawmakers who want Parliament to have a say in the exit process if talks in Brussels fail to reach an acceptable deal.

The move means that Theresa May now faces the prospect of having her proposals discarded by the House of Lords next week.

The Prime Minister saw off defeat on the EU Withdrawal Bill at the last minute on Tuesday by persuading rebels that she would offer concessions to address their concerns about being given a truly "meaningful vote" on the final Brexit deal. Allegedly Remain-leaning Tory MPs were furious and it set the scene for another big showdown when the bill returns to Parliament next week.

Leading pro-EU Conservative Dominic Grieve told the Press Association: "It is unacceptable in my view".

Rebel Tory MP, Dominic Grieve warned that MPs could "collapse the government" if they were denied the ability to block a "catastrophic" no-deal Brexit.

With Theresa May also facing pressure from pro-Brexit MPs to avoid any possibility of Britain remaining tied to the European Union, the Prime Minister's hold on power appears to be more fragile than any time since last year's general election.

Cristiano Ronaldo 'agrees to pay $21m' to end Spanish tax case
After an epic between Egypt and Uruguay, Portugal and Spain 3-3 draw on Friday was for sure one of the best match of the decade. It was a very competitive match. "We respect all our opponents and with a good team like Spain, even more so".

Notwithstanding her battles with backbenchers, May has rejected claims that divisions within her cabinet on the way forward were making negotiations with Brussels harder.

"We could collapse the government, and I can assure you I wake up at 2 a.m.in a cold sweat thinking about the problems we have put on our shoulders", Dominic Grieve, a leading pro-EU lawmaker negotiating with the government, told the BBC.

That threatens May's authority over her divided party, and underlines the balancing act she has to pull off to keep onside those who want a "softer" Brexit, without upsetting those in favour of a clean break with the EU.

It comes after a turbulent week for Mrs May, in which Mr Grieve branded a Government amendment to the Withdrawal Bill as "unacceptable" if the United Kingdom fails to reach an "agreement in principle" with Brussels.

The opposition Liberal Democrats confirmed they would support an amendment in the Lords this week to ensure parliament is given a "meaningful vote".

Ahead of the Lords debate tomorrow, Lord Newby, who leads the Liberal Democrats in the upper chamber, accused Mrs May's plans on the Brexit bill as "breathtaking in their arrogance and deceit".

The result of this vote could see the parliament given more power in the Brexit deal if no deal is reached by November.

"Parliament must be given a meaningful vote on all possible outcomes of Brexit - and this must be guaranteed in writing".
